Lady Gaga has announced her new album title, finally giving fans a release date for her hotly anticipated studio LP. Joanne will be Gaga’s first album since 2013’s ARTPOP, which received mixed reviews from critics. Joanne will be released late next month (Oct. 21).
Gaga revealed both the album title and release date with Zane Lowe on Beats Radio this past Thursday (Sept. 15). She further told Lowe that she is counting down the 48 hours until the album is finished, as well as that it features collaborations with hip songwriter Hillary Lindsey, who is famous for Carrie Underwood’s song “Jesus, Take the Wheel.”
Joanne currently contains 12 songs but Gaga reports that it may be taken down to 11, and then release 14 on the deluxe version.
The album is allegedly a tribute to Gaga’s aunt Joanne, who died of Lupus in 1974 at the young age of 19. Joanne is also the singer’s middle name and her father Joe Germanotta’s restaurant is also named "Joanne Trattoria" after his sister.
“Perfect Illusion,” the first single from the forthcoming album was released this past Friday. The accompanying music video will be released soon and was reportedly directed by Ruth Hogben, a fashion photographer and filmmaker.
It was rumored that the new single contained a link to Gaga’s ex-boyfriend, actor Taylor Kinney because of the lyric “It wasn’t love, it wasn’t love, it was a perfect illusion.”
Gaga clarified the link on Andy Cohen’s Sirius XM radio show, and confirmed that it is not about Kinney.
“It’s sort of the elephant in the room: ‘Perfect Illusion,’” she said to Cohen. “‘Is it about Taylor?’ is what everyone’s wondering. And maybe it’s because I know you, but I love Taylor so, so much and this song is not a hit out against Taylor. He’s my best friend.”
