After last year's Robin Thicke/Miley Cyrus twerking debacle at the MTV Video Music Awards, it seems like the show is going to be a little more tween-friendly this year. After announcing its first performer Ariana Grande last week, today (July 9) another group has been added to the VMAs lineup... pop-punky boy band and One Direction protégés 5 Seconds Of Summer.
The "She Looks So Perfect" group made the announcement on its Twitter.
"We're performing at the @MTV VMAs in August! To be asked & given this opportunity's incredible, we can't be more excited about it :D #5SOSVMAs," the band announced.
There is a slight downside to the band's VMA performance... it means that 5 Seconds Of Summer have to drop out of two supporting dates on One Direction's Where We Are Tour... but in announcing the tour cancellations in Dallas and St. Louis (on Aug. 24 and 27).
The band also teased a future announcement, which is likely to be its own North American headlining tour. Earlier this week, 5SOS revealed the first leg of some 2015 tour dates in Europe for a trek entitled the Rock Out With Your Socks Out Tour.
In traditional 5SOS news style, the band's very dedicated fans took to Twitter to announce their excitement, mostly at the idea of the foursome all wearing suits to the ceremony (an unlikely event for the punk-influenced group).
5 Seconds Of Summer is the second act confirmed for the 2014 MTV VMAs, set to take place on Aug. 24. Earlier this month, it was announced that Ariana Grande will perform her new single "Break Free," leading up to the release of her album My Everything.
