The major music festival lineup announcements got under way in earnest yesterday when Coachella unveiled their billing. Today the attention turns to the East Coast where Governors Ball will unveil their 2017 lineup. Tool was already announced last year as a headliner with their first show in New York City in over a decade. Chance the Rapper, Phoenix, Lorde and Flume at the top of the billing will join the rock outfit.
Other big names headed to New York City this summer include Wu-Tang Clan, Childish Gambino, Wiz Khalifa, Logic, Cage The Elephant, Marshmello, Beach House, The Avalanches, Phantogram and the interesting combination of Mark Ronson vs Kevin Parker.
The lineup has a solid undercard as well. There are buzzing names such as Saint Motel, Arizona, Kaiydo, Tray Maidza, Lo Moon, Dua Lipa, Eden and Blossoms all towards the bottom of the billing that should be worth seeing.
There are a few interesting names on here as well including Zane Lowe, the Beats 1 DJ, who presents live events for Apple Music, but does not go out and do gigs. The Avalanches announced their first gig in the United States in nearly 15 years at Coachella yesterday, so Governors Ball could be the start of a festival tour across the United States. The Kevin Parker & Mark Ronson collaboration should yield some interesting results. Tame Impala performed two years ago, but now Kevin Parker is back to doing his own thing, so we will see how they program this set.
Other names in the middle of the billing that should seal the deal include RÜFÜS Du Sol, Banks, Royal Blood, Bleachers, Charli XCX and Danny Brown.
Governors Ball will take place from June 2-4 on Randall's Island in New York City. Tickets go on sale this Friday, Jan. 6 at 12 p.m. EST. Pick them up here.
