Surprise, Surprise: 'Game Of Thrones' Is Still The Most Pirated Show Of 2017

Game of Thrones has been undoubtedly one of the famous shows to hit television screens since 2011.

It continues to dominate people's conversations and news headlines this year. This is why it is understandable if it still holds the record as the most pirated show on the internet.

Game of Thrones made it to the list of most torrented TV shows of the year. The HBO drama series continues its reign as the most pirated show on the internet. Season 7 of Game of Thrones had the most illegal downloads on BitTorrent. It ranked first on TorrentFreak, a website that covers piracy and file sharing.

This marks the sixth year in a row that the show ranked first on TorrentFreak's annual list. An episode had a maximum of 40,000 shares across several torrents, especially after the Season 7 finale came out.

Probably, the numerous leaks that came out ahead of the Season 7 premiere contributed to the show's torrent standing. There were several plot spoilers and set photos that leaked before and in the duration of the season.

Employees of an Indian HBO distributor leaked Episode 4 early, which resulted in their arrest. HBO also suffered a major hack earlier this year and was asked for an unspecified amount of money in exchange for the hacked data. Suffice to say that hacks and piracy plagued Game of Thrones Season 7.

Because of this, HBO is taking great measures to prevent the hacks and leaks from happening again, especially with the show's final run. Game of Thrones Season 8 does not hit TV screens until 2019, yet showrunners have are already implemented strict rules for the cast to prevent leaks and spoilers.

Recently, Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, revealed that the showrunners have banned them from social media for the duration of filming for Season 8. The cast also does not know how the show ends. Likewise, HBO announced that Game of Thrones Season 8 will shoot multiple endings to mislead fans.

Meanwhile, aside from Game of Thrones, Robert Kirkman's The Walking Dead also made it to TorrentFreak's annual list of most illegal downloads. The AMC show stays in the same spot it was last year at number 2. The Flash and The Big Bang Theory grabbed the third and fourth spot, respectively. Another show from The CW Arrow landed on number 10. Newcomers to the list include Rick and Morty, Sherlock, and Prison Break.
