John Legend has received nominations at the Emmy Awards for his performance as Jesus on NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live.
The singer, songwriter, actor, and celebrity activist has inched toward the rare EGOT, a star who won awards at the Emmys, the Grammys, the Oscars, and the Tonys. Only a few people in Hollywood have achieved the honor so far, and Legend could be joining the list.
John Legend, 'Jesus Christ Superstar' Receive Emmy Nominations
On Thursday, July 12, the Academy of Television announced the nominees for the 70th annual Emmy Awards. The red carpet and the awarding ceremony is scheduled to take place on Sept. 17 and will be aired live by NBC.
Jesus Christ Superstar, which aired on April 1, Easter Sunday, received a total of 13 nominations including Best Movie/Mini Supporting Actress and Best Movie/Mini Actor for its lead stars.
Legend so far has 10 Grammys, one Oscars for Best Original Song (Selma, 2014), and, more recently, a Tonys for producing Jitney, which won Best Play Revival.
If the father of two wins, he will be the 13th artist to win all four major awards after Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks, Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn, and others.
Gold Derby adds that, if Jesus Christ Superstar brings home a trophy, producers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice will also EGOT. The two stage and movie veterans have been waiting for a longtime for an Emmys to complete their collections of awards from the Grammys, the Oscars, and the Tonys.
John Legend, Chrissy Teigen React To Emmy Nominations
Following the announcement of this year's nominees, Legend issued a statement that was published by Deadline. This is the first time that the singer-songwriter has received a nod from the Television Academy.
"When I started my career, I just wanted to make some really great songs and albums and hopefully win some Grammys," he said. "This recent turn of events is really exciting, but this is nothing, at the beginning of my career, that I would have ever bet on."
The "All Of Me" singer also previously appeared in the Academy Award-winning big screen musical La La Land.
His wife, television host and author Chrissy Teigen, might have to move some of her own trophies out of the way, but she remains proud of her husband.
