Despite being a well-known composer who has been performing and writing songs for years, David Elfman still experiences anxiety before taking the stage, especially at last weekend's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival; what happened to the singer?
Elfman made headlines over the past few days for his bizarre performances of different soundtracks like "The Simpsons," "Alice In Wonderland," "Batman," and many more.
Speaking to Variety, the 68-year-old rocker said he wasn't expecting the "crazy headlines," and he thought they were hilarious.
The Academy Award-nominated composer is popularly known for his previous works for "The Nightmare Before Christmas," "Fifty Shades of Grey," and "Men In Black."
Reflecting on his performance, Elfman said, "It was intense and very interesting and cool. And it was a strange kind of a lifetime of experience all in one hour," he added. (via Indiewire)
He's also relieved that he and his 50-piece band "made it through in one piece."
Prior to the show, the composer was speaking to a friend, saying they only had 30 minutes to set up a show that's never been performed before with 50 musicians on stage. He joked, "What could possibly go wrong."
It was worth it in the end as the music came together really well, except for the dust storm that hit his face.
Speaking about his preparation for the set, Elfman revealed the performance was "going to be a really risky endeavor" because no one has attempted to mix different kinds of elements in one musical mashup before.
He also felt a "lot of mental hesitation and anxiety" during the show as he was afraid to ask people if they could "hang me for this" or "is it a feelony, or is it just a musical misdemeanor."
The musician changed his mindset to a different mentality, saying he wanted to come out precisely if the audience saw him decades ago, and he's not embarrassed or ashamed by that.
While performing his sixth song, Elfman took a risk and removed his shirt on stage as he just wanted to have fun that evening, and he didn't care what other people would tell him despite his age.
Aside from the original scores mentioned above, the singer's setlist also included original compositions and covers from his Oingo Boingo band.
