Sad news for The Pogues fans. Darryl Hunt, popularly known for being the band's bassist, has passed away at the age of 72.
The shocking news was confirmed through the punk group's official Twitter account, saying they are "saddened beyond words" after the musician died Monday afternoon in London, United Kingdom.
Along with a devastating caption, the band also shared a photo of the bassist holding a guitar case as well as lyrics to their song "Love You Till the End," written by their beloved band member.
Many people were crushed upon learning about his death, especially the group's frontman Shane MacGowan who paid a separate tribute.
"I am very very sorry that Darryl has passed on, he was a really nice guy and a great friend and a great bass player," he wrote.
He added that the band will miss him, and they wish him a "happy state of eternal bliss." The singer also sent his love to Hunt's family and friends.
As of this writing, the bassist's cause of death remains mysterious as his family has not released an official statement about the matter.
Darryl Hunt's Life
According to The Guardian, Hunt was born in Hampshire on May 4, 1950. Aside from being a member of The Pogues, he was also involved in other music acts like the Favourites and Plummet Airlines.
Growing up, he studied at Allhallows College in Lyme Regis, Devon. The musician later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art degree at the Nottingham School of Art.
While attending university, he studied under Steve Willets and Vic Birgin.
According to his bio on the band's official website, his first involvement in music was with Plummet Airlines until he founded The Favorites.
Darryl Hunt's Music Career
The first years of his music career was hard as he struggled to earn money. He later decided to work for The Pogues as a tour manager, looking after instruments, a driver and more.
He occassionally filled in for Cait O'Riorden whenever he's not available to perform on stage.
Fortunately for him, the band's former bass player went to switch bands and he became a permanent member in 1986.
He played for the next ten years until The Pogues disbanded in 1996.
Aside from being a full-time bassist, Hunt also played guitar, drums, and contributed backing vocals. One of the most popular songs he wrote was "Love You Till The End" from the record "Pogue Mahone."
