Is Shakira all right? The music artist has recently been involved in various problems, including an alleged tax scam in Spain and her divorce from Gerard Pique.
Though she is currently putting on a brave face, being imprisoned is her biggest dread.
"She's suffering from awful sleeplessness and worry about the whole complicated scenario," a source told Life & Style magazine. The prospect of being separated from her loved ones is terrible."
If proven guilty, the Colombian singer faces up to eight years in prison for allegedly neglecting to pay the Spanish government $15 million in taxes between 2012 and 2014.
Shakira's tax fraud case is scheduled to go to trial after she rejected a compromise offer from prosecutors. However, no trial date has been set as of this writing.
Prosecutors are allegedly requesting the court to punish the "Waka Waka" hitmaker to eight years and two months in prison if convicted. If a first-time offender is sentenced to less than two years in prison, a judge may waive prison time.
Prior to the tax fraud allegations, the singer-dancer had already had a rough year as her father was rushed to the hospital following a horrific fall.
Following that, Shakira and Gerard declared the split of their 11-year marriage due to infidelity allegations.
"There were trust concerns," the source told the magazine. "They'd been fighting for years, until Shakira eventually booted him out."
Gerard, on the other hand, has become uncontrollable after their divorce. According to the source, the "Whenever, Wherever" singer is concerned about losing her two children, Milan and Sasha, to her ex.
"She is afraid he would battle to remove the children if the trial does not go her way. But Shakira is convinced that justice will win in the end."
However, this news should be taken with a grain of salt. There is no indication that Shakira is facing an eight-year prison sentence.
Though the conclusion of her trial is unknown, it is obvious that her attorneys would go to whatever length to keep her out of jail, and they are convinced that Shakira will not be convicted of anything.
After all, they've always maintained that she's been paying her taxes.
