Living and deceased legends' personal items are very valuable as many of them are being purchased by fans for thousands of dollars. More recently, it has been announced that the original handwritten lyrics for one of David Bowie's iconic songs will be sold in an auction.
According to Wales Online, the singer's handwritten lyrics for "Starman" have been owned by the same person since the 80s.
Today, the valuable manuscript will be up for sale and it's expected to be worth more than $46,000.
The track was initially released in 1972 and was a part of the hit album "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars."
The piece is an A4 page featuring edits made by the legend himself. The manuscript had spelling mistakes and additions.
Omega Auctions will be the auction house responsible for the selling and manager Dan Hampson issued a statement about the piece.
"David Bowie remains one of the most influential recording artists of all time and someone whose lasting influence on music is still being studied," he said.
He added that an item like this excites their collectors as it brings them closer to their idols, especially since Bowie's song is a "work of true genius."
Aside from the handwritten manuscript, other items will also be sold at the glam rock sale on September 27.
This was not the first time a personal item of Bowie was purchased by a fan as the demo of "Starman" was sold in 2019 for a whopping $58,000.
In the recording, the singer can be heard talking to Mick Ronson, saying that he has not finished the song yet.
Auctions Are Very Common in the Music Industry
Bowie isn't the first singer to have a personal item to be sold at an auction as living legend Bob Dylan's original handwritten lyrics for "Like a Rolling Stone" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" was previously put up in auction.
Both lyric sheets were sold for between $425,000 to $1,375,000.
Dylan reportedly wrote the manuscript when he was staying at the Roger Smith Hotel in Washington D.C.
Nirvana's Kurt Cobain's Fender Mustang electric guitar was also sold for a whopping $4.5 million. The iconic left-handed instrument was featured in the band's music video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
