Music leakage has become a thing that many artists nowadays try hard to avoid. Not only would it preempt the element of surprise that producers are eyeing, it also promotes a culture of piracy that artists have long been fighting against.
Last midnight, while everyone was waiting for Taylor Swift to release "Midnights," everyone was shocked to see a song that wasn't actually slated for release.
Spotify released SZA's highly-anticipated new song, "Shirt." The track has been widely-teased on social media in the past few weeks, but despite that, no release date has been posted yet.
Shortly after everyone was taken aback by the surprise announcement and release, the streaming giant immediately took down the song off its platform.
Because of this, a flurry of fans has rallied on social media, urging SZA to release it after the leakage.
"shirt was probably accidentally released. that's why the link doesn't work nor can we see it on her page," a fan posted.
"I was going to listen to Shirt after Midnights (by Taylor Swift). Why did they do SZA like that?" a user expressed.
"Sza release shirt please," one desperately asked.
SZA's music have been in the headlines for a number of months already. From the fiery back and forth with Top Dawg Entertainment to finally granting her wishes to release her album soon, SZA and her fans' patience have been put to the test.
At the recent Mad Cool Festival, SZA even hinted that she has another collaboration with an artist she had worked with before.
Want to know a secret? You all want to know who's on this song? It'll be like our secret, right? The hint is we already have a song together. Her name starts with a 'D' and it rhymes with Soulja," she said.
Obviously, all roads lead to Doja Cat. The two won their very first GRAMMY award with their last collaboration, "Kiss Me More," for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
SZA revealed to a TMZ report earlier this week that she already had 100 songs recorded in the past five years. She also went on to reveal that the album's rollout would be out "any day now."
With the news of her new album coming out soon, and the "Shirt" leak, it could be expected that it would be officially released in the next couple of weeks.
