Def Leppard's Rick Allen has an inspirational story to share with his fans as he initially wanted to quit doing music after being involved in an accident years ago. Fortunately, he regained his confidence thanks to his close friends and family.
In an interview with Page Six, the 59-year-old drummer said he "really didn't want to be here" and he felt defeated after losing his left arm following an accident in England.
At the time, he felt "very awkward" and "self-conscious." At first, doctors were able to reattach his arm, but it was removed after being infected.
The iconic musician was able to get his confidence and career back when he started using an electronic drum kit which is specially designed for his needs.
In addition, he also got massive support from his bandmates, fans, and family. "a lot of encouragement, they all tried to help lift me up and then finally I got it," he said.
Allen returned to music after realizing that he could still play the drums and that's all because of discovering the "power of the human spirit."
The drummer and his wife Lauren Monroe are currently touring. They are the founders of The Raven Drum Foundation, a charity group that helps veterans overcome PTSD by offering alternative medical programs like drumming.
The reason why they decided to incorporate music is that drumming has benefits for veterans.
"It helps with the brain, it helps with the nervous system and it slows down the respiratory system, it's something that is beneficial on many many levels," he explained.
What Happened to Rick Allen's Arm?
According to Forbes, Rick Allen attempted to pass a vehicle on a winding country road around the area of Sheffield, England, on December 31, 1984.
He told the outlet that he was with his girlfriend at the time when an Alfa Romeo drove past them. He was amazed by its speed so he tried to catch up.
Every time he attempted to pass, the other car would speed up and I kept going on until he lost his patience and stepped his foot down. However, moments later, there was a long corner and it was too late for him to control the car.
During the incident, he, unfortunately, lost his left arm, saying "the arm stayed in the car, and I disappeared through the sunroof, banging my head really badly going out, and ended up probably 150 yards away in a field, literally just lying there."
