Sam Smith explained what their new album "Gloria" truly means.

Ahead of the "Gloria" release, Smith - who uses they/them pronouns - sat for an interview with Michelle Visage on Tuesday in which they talked about their non-binary identity and their upcoming album.

They revealed that their studio set, "Gloria," would be released on January 27 via Capitol Records. They told Visage that the inspiration of the album is the fans' process of identifying and discovering their identities

"There's a fighter voice in all of us and you've just got to look after that. My album Gloria, I've called it Gloria because I've called that voice inside me Gloria. It's like a voice in my head that just says, 'You can do it'. And kids have just got to access that voice and feed it," they said.

Their comment resonated with what they revealed on their Billboard cover story in August, saying that joy - for them and queer people - is a dangerous place. Still, they acknowledged how courageous act it is to step into it.

Elsewhere in the recent interview, Smith admitted they have always been non-binary and queer. Although it took them a long time to find the right words, they finally found a place where they could exist while enjoying the inner peace they always wanted to feel.

Sam Smith Came Out as Non-Binary

Smith changed their pronouns three years ago, sharing a post on Instagram that revealed they decided to embrace themselves.

They also told Jameela Jamil that year they flow somewhere between male and female. When they opened up about being non-binary, they clarified that they were not yet ready to speak that much about it.

However, they expressed how "visible and open" their intention was.

Following her admission, the trans engagement manager at Stonewall Toryn Glavin told BBC that they felt delighted following Smith's revelation. Glavin also applauded the singer for being open about their identities, leading that visibility to bring a huge impact on other non-binary people.

Smith proved themselves, even more, when they became the first nonbinary artist to hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart.

Their song, "Unholy," made history with Kim Petras as it topped the Billboard Hot 100 weeks after its release. The music video also reached millions of views on YouTube.

Smith's upcoming album follows their 2020's "Love Goes." They previously dropped "In the Lonely Hour" and "The Thrill of It All" in 2014 and 2017, respectively.
