Ever since "Planet Her" was released, Doja Cat fans have been hounding her to release her next album already.
In the past few months, Doja has hinted at what the public should expect from her upcoming project.
To date, she has shared on different occasions what the genre is - but confusingly, the things do not add up.
In May 2022, speaking to Elle Magazine, Doja Cat's new album was said to be a "predominantly rap" album.
"I have been getting songs and things sent to me... Oh f*ck, I wish I could tell people! There's some really cool stuff that I got sent from friends. They're all working on beats, and I'm giving them notes, and they know what I want, so I'm excited," she hinted at the time. The magazine described the album to be an "exciting entry" in this era of young female rappers - which they revealed to have Doja has already collaborated.
But the "predominantly rap" album changed in September when she told CR Fashion Book that she's taking inspiration from "90s German rave music." But weeks later, the "Get Into It (Yuh)" hitmaker recanted her statements on Twitter.
"im not doing a german rave culture album you guys i was pranking the outlet that interviewed me about it," she revealed in a flurry of tweets. "i'm doing an r&B album (straight r&b and no rap at all)."
These recent statements add another layer of confusion to the already confusing statements she put out on the press. From "predominantly rap," to "90s German rave music," to "straight r&b and no rap at all," fans of the Grammy-winning singer are still in limbo about what to expect.
However, in a most recent interview with Dazed Magazine, Doja painted a rather clearer vision of what her next project would be.
"I'm crazy about putting different genres into the same album or even into the same song," she admitted.
Describing her new album as "a bouquet of things," Doja had this to say.
"There's songs from a year and a half ago that I made and I'm like, 'These need to come out.' I have a project that's going to be quite consistent, hopefully, which is coming up next and is the real album, the real project," she said. "But before that, I would like to put out some singles that don't really connect to it in any way. They're just fun things that I would like to put out."
While it is advised to take Doja's statements with a grain of salt because of her previous "pranks," the recent revelation made sense of her changing genres. Plus, after all, we will be getting more singles before the album drops, so it's a win-win!
