Billy Joel remained successful throughout the past few decades as he continues to tour around the United States as well as performing at his soldout residencies. Even though he's still relevant in the music industry today, the musician has yet to release new material for over 20 years now.
According to Classic Rock 96.1, the Piano Man has not publicly released an album of original popular music since 1993 when he dropped "River of Dreams." His final overall album was "Fantasies & Delusions" in 2001.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, the 73-year-old musician revealed the main reason why he stopped producing music for decades, saying it wasn't his decision, but rather, he felt like it's time for him to stop writing songs.
"I didn't have the same motivation anymore. You need inspiration to create good new music, and if you don't have it, don't bother. Get off the treadmill, for Christ's sake."
In addition, the singer noted that he got to a point where it was getting "excruciating" for him to write and the enjoyment from producing songs went out of it.
Elsewhere in the conversation, Joel said he wishes he could remove at least 25% of his songs from his previous albums.

The reason why he dislike the projects was that he wrote "some real stinkers" and he wished to take them back. He also noted that he would add six or seven songs that he initially thought were good, but there would be a couple of "squeeze outs" at the end just to finalize a record.
Some of the songs he wished to have removed were "When in Rome" from the 1989 record "Storm Front" and "C'etait toi (You Were the One) from 1980's "Glass Houses."
