Chief Keef faces arrest and a $50,000 bail after failing to appear in court.
The 19-year-old recently blew off his hearing for a DUI arrest, according to a report from TMZ. The site notes that Keef (birth name: Keith Cozart) already has an impressive resume of run-ins: failure to pay child support, a shooting incident and a rehab stint to combat marijuana addiction (he's already been jailed twice for pot offenses).
Recently, the rapper was seen lighting up in an Instagram video while bumping his new single "Nobody," which features Kanye West.
His album Bang 3 is expected later this year, and the Chicago Sun-Times recently profiled him with a focus on his move from the Windy City to Los Angeles.
"He shot to celebrity status in an environment that doesn't work for that," Manager Rovan "Dro" Manuel said. "Now out here [in LA] there are other guys in his age range and on his level of stardom. And, to be honest with you, it's a lot more positive. It's just him being around certain things and getting exposed."
The Sun-Times asked Keef if it's true that he makes $5,000 per week selling merchandise (his managers say he owns his image and can collect his own money from it, a rarity given his reported multimillion-dollar deal with Interscope).
"One week, no, in a week and a half, I made $20,000," Keef said. "Maybe just 'cause my fans . . . they like me. They love me. Heh. I got negative fans who love me. It's tough love."
Keef has shown a predilection for social media and online marketing, something that's set him apart from other peers.
"Because of where we from, it's already prejudged," Chicago designer Martez Malone said. "The kid is a product of his environment. He was just really blessed that he had talent with the music and he was able to change his life for the better for him and his family."
But run-ins with the law are becoming commonplace for a young man who's still in his teens. Skipping court is a serious matter with expensive consequences, and Keef can't seem to fight off his demons.
