The Weeknd's "The Idol" is one of the most-anticipated television series this year. With a star-studded cast like Abel Tesfaye himself, Troye Sivan, Jennie Kim, and Lily-Rose Depp, the talent and promise of the cast eclipse the controversies and issues surrounding the production of the show.
Depp, who is expected to be the show's breakout star, is notably the lead of the show. In a new interview with W Magazine, she detailed whose music artists she draws inspiration from when performing her character.
Lily-Rose Depp's Jocelyn 'The Idol' Inspiration
W Magazine says that the closest "real-life" twin to Lily-Rose Depp's character Jocelyn was probably Britney Spears, among many others.
However, the actress also revealed that she saw "shades" of cinematic femme fatales like "Basic Instinct's" Sharon Stone and "Jules and Jim's" Jeanne Moreau.
Aside from those iconic characters, Depp also said that she also draws inspiration from other iconic pop stars.
"Who doesn't love Britney? But I was also thinking about Beyoncé, Mariah, and every huge pop star of our time. I wanted Jocelyn to be the kind of woman who can dominate a room, someone who doesn't ever shy away from their sparkle," she confessed.
In "The Idol," Jocelyn, played by Depp, is an aspiring pop idol who wanted to reclaim her title as the "sexiest pop star in America," began a complicated relationship with The Weeknd's "Tedros," an influential contemporary cult figure and industry figure.
Lily-Rose Depp's Jocelyn 'The Idol' Audition
Elsewhere in the magazine interview, it was revealed that Depp thought she wouldn't even score a callback after the audition.
"She sang a minute of 'Fever.' I was going through the casting tapes, and Lily-Rose immediately stood out," "The Idol" executive producer Ashley Levinson told the magazine.
According to Levinson, Depp had the kind of vulnerability and strength that the character needed.
On meeting The Weeknd for the first time, Depp recalled Abel being "so warm and friendly." She admitted that she was nervous about the chemistry test because she wanted the part.
Eventually, she got the part and described her character and The Weeknd's Tedros' connection as a "dangerous" one.
"The Idol" is set to premiere on Jun. 4, 2023, at HBO. However, the series will also have a special showcase at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. (via Deadline)
