Athletes want to be musicians, and vice versa. It’s basically a scientific fact.
But when NBA player Robbie Hummel posted the following photo to Instagram and announced that he would be dropping an album, people were shocked.
The announcement took his own team by surprise:
@Twolves_PR no this is the real deal
— Robbie Hummel (@RobbieHummel) August 27, 2014
Soon, Hummel was recruiting some big names from the hip-hop world to join him on ROB: Road To Redemption.
Hey @50cent have a big opportunity for a track on my new cd...let's get @JustBlaze in the studio and drop the track #ROB:RoadtoRedemption — Robbie Hummel (@RobbieHummel) August 27, 2014
50 was apparently busy, and fans became skeptical, so Hummel — a Purdue grad who has one year of NBA experience — decided to give them a preview of what was to come:
219 On my grind Got them haters on my mind The ACL Can burn in hell Ride of die From Parker drive. #dropthemic #ThoseBarsAreTooCold
— Robbie Hummel (@RobbieHummel) August 28, 2014
After directing followers to the DatPiff homepage and telling them to "download my mixtape," Hummel finally hung ‘em up:
I'm sorry to say but I feel I have accomplished all I can in the hip hop game...and am announcing my retirement effective immediately — Robbie Hummel (@RobbieHummel) August 28, 2014
But rest assured, no one will ever, ever, ever forget about this. He could win MVP while simultaneously saving the United States from nuclear attack, and people will still be like, "Yeah, but remember...?"
Haha ok since people still think I'm making a rap album...it was all a joke..I was in a studio recording a voiceover for a commercial

For those disappointed by the hoax, look at it like this: ROB: Road To Redemption is basically this decade’s Detox, but with a better chance of reaching the public.
