Jimmy Buffett faced at least three near-death experiences before his actual death on Friday, September 1.
Buffett's social media accounts and website confirmed the heartbreaking news on Saturday, September 2, regarding the music icon's death. The singer, 76, passed away while battling cancer.
"Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs," it read. "He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many."
Upon his demise, his past near-death experiences reemerged and tickled people's curiosity because of the amazing way Buffett survived them.
Jimmy Buffett Almost Died in 3 Separate Occasions
Buffett's series of near-death experiences started in 1978 when he was on his sailboat in San Salvador.
In music writer Ryan White's book, "Jimmy Buffett: A Good Life All the Way," he revisited the singer's trip and how he anchored in a cove. A cigarette boat asked to use his radar, something he approved if he could drive the vessel.
Buffett partied on a nearby sailboat and fell asleep, soon waking up while surrounded by water. Fortunately, he was found and received help as to how he could go back to the land.
Two decades after the incident, the Tampa Bay Times reported how the icon's seaplane almost capsized while taking off Nantucket Island due to a wave it accidentally hit. He fortunately survived by escaping the plane and swimming to a passing boat, though the experience caused him pain afterward.
Despite the traumatizing experience, he told the Boston Globe in 1995 that he was still flying because he had a safer plane.
"For a while I got introspective about it, but you've got to get back up. I called a therapist I'd seen off and on in California to tell him about it - and to say I was having flashbacks - but the week before, the therapist had also ditched his plane," he shared. "Boy, did we have one heck of a therapy session!"
He still opened up about the effects of the near-death experience and mentioned the first one he encountered when he was 19.
The third and last incident happened two years after the plane crash. Buffett faced another plane mishap when Jamaican authorities thought his plane was part of a drug-smuggling operation, so they shot at it.
Buffet, who was with U2 frontman Bono and his family, ducked for cover before disembarking. Fortunately, no one was injured at that time.
