Before launching his solo career, Corey Taylor was the lead vocalist of Slipknot as well as Stone Sour, however, it was also due to issues regarding songwriting credit that ultimately led to him leaving both bands.
"When Stone Sour first started, not only was I playing guitar constantly, but I was also the lead guitarist and main writer," Taylor told Paste magazine.
"Honestly, one of the reasons why I was very adamant about starting my solo thing is that there was a weird misconception around who was writing what for what band."
The singer-songwriter went on to explain that not only was he not credited for several hits, but fans assumed that guitarist Jim Root or Josh Rand were the ones behind all the songwriting.
"Maybe this is where my ego comes into play, but I felt like I wasn't getting the credit for the things I was actually writing [...]"
Corey Taylor, Slipknot Parts Ways
Taylor was designated as #8 in Slipknot. He joined the band in 1997, replacing their original lead singer Anders Colsefni.
He was with Slipknot for the release of their second demo album, which turned out to be the band's debut self-titled album and their second studio album "Iowa."
"With Slipknot, there was a lot of stuff that either wouldn't have been written without me, or that I wrote that other people gave [themselves] credit [for]," Taylor continued.
"As someone who takes great pride in sitting down and creating something from nothing - just from my imagination - that stuck in my craw."
Corey Taylor Sets The Records Straight With Songwriting Credits
Taylor went on to explain how he was never selfish about sharing the credit for the song he wrote, and has "never taken credit for anything [he] didn't do."
"I've always been the first to shine the spotlight on anybody else. I don't necessarily get that in return."
The reason why he is bringing this up now is because he is "setting the record straight and changing the narrative," and "showing people that, 'Oh yeah, he does write heavy shit. And country shit. And acoustic shit. And piano shit. And rock shit. Hardcore shit' - the gamut."

Corey Taylor's Solo Career
Taylor just released a new album "CMF2," and while he is still a rocker by heart, his body just can no longer keep up with the demands of a tour.
"It's the knees, it's my feet. I have a broken toe on this foot. I have gout across my feet," Taylor explained. "It gets up into my joints and shit. It's tough. I'm not as nimble as I used to be. I'm not 35 anymore. It's hard. But there are ways to do shows that don't require being that crazy now."
While the spirit is willing, Taylor acknowledges that the flesh might not be.
