Tragedy struck Migos rapper Quavo when his nephew and fellow band member Takeoff fell victim to gun violence.
Takeoff died last year after being shot after a dice game went south.
In response, the artist has taken a stand against this issue, determined to make a difference.
Quavo took part in a panel hosted by the Community Justice Action Fund and Vice President Kamala Harris regarding gun violence prevention in a move that was seen as incredibly influential.
The event provided an opportunity for open dialogue about this dangerous and often overlooked issue.
Quavo said in a statement, per the Associated Press, "I feel like your calling comes at the least expected times. You don't think nothing is going to happen."
He said, "I must step up to the plate and hit a home run. I have to do something about it so it won't happen to the masses - especially in our culture. I don't want this to happen to the next person. I want to knock down these percentages."
The rapper stressed the need for greater gun control, highlighting the need to prevent events like these in any location. He said that steps should be taken to ensure people cannot hurt others, such crimes shouldn't occur.
The shooting of Takeoff in 2022 shook Quavo to his core, leaving him with an urgent question: "How can (guns) be used properly?" He continued to ponder, "And how do you keep them out of the hands of people who make bad decisions?"
"I'm kind of in a half-and-half place. Even police have guns. Unfortunately, some people in our culture and loved ones have been lost to police brutality. It's all about choices and how we can put a filter on who can use these guns."
Quavo Mocked Online
The presence of Quavo at the White House sparked intense debate regarding the issue of gun control and violence prevention, reigniting a conversation that has been happening for many years across multiple online channels.
Sharp disagreements were expressed over the matter, and some users pointed out the irony of it, encouraging the rapper to live up to his stance on guns.
Additionally, some maintained that it wasn't just about firearms, sparking an animated dialogue on the subject.
At the same time, a portion of those participating declared that this problem could be related to a "lifestyle" issue rather than gun control alone.
The rapper has received significant backlash from the online community due to speaking out on gun reforms.
One user took to X and posted, "It wasn't the guns that caused this; it was the environment and associations of those involved. To say otherwise is outrageous."
A different opinion was voiced, suggesting that "He shouldn't be talking about it in his music LMFAO."
A different person then suggested, "Rather than rapping about murder, why not encourage your peers to focus on something more positive rather than programming the youth with violent lyrics? Lead by example, and others will surely follow."
