The Country music genre has been largely tied with the conservative rhetoric and Republican agenda in the past few years and Country music superstar Maren Morris is walking away from it.

Morris, a known progressive, has been candid about her thoughts about the toxic arm of the genre.

Maren Morris Doubles Down On Leaving Country Music

In an appearance on the New York Times podcast Popcast, Maren Morris doubled down on her decision to leave the controversial genre.

"I love living in Nashville, I have my family. There's a reason why people come there from L.A. and New York to write with us. It's because we have amazing songwriters there. That's not gonna change," she first said.

Shortly after, the Grammy-winning singer spilled the caveat.

"I couldn't do this circus anymore - feeling like l have to absorb and explain people's bad behaviors and laugh it off. I just couldn't do that after 2020 particularly. I've changed. A lot of things changed about me that year," she admitted.

Morris has since asked that her work not be considered anymore on Country music award shows.

However, Morris said that "leaving" might be an exaggeration, but she still stands by in not participating in a lot of it and instead just doing her own thing.

Why is Maren Morris Leaving Country Music?

Maren Morris spoke about the idea of leaving the genre in an interview with The Los Angeles Times last September 2023.

She shared that her progressive advocacy has become a challenge in the genre and the industry.

"I've always been an asker of questions and a status quo challenger just by being a woman. So it wasn't really even a choice," she said at the time. "The further you get into the country music business, that's when you start to see the cracks. And once you see it, you can't un-see it."

In the past, Morris had been outspoken about Morgan Wallen speaking a racial slur and being caught on camera. She had also criticized Jason Aldean's wife, Brittany Aldean for making transphobic remarks.

She simply explained to the publication that she is leaving country music genre "because of what she views as the country music industry's unwillingness to honestly reckon with its history of racism and misogyny and to open its gates to more women and queer people and people of color.
