Scott Weiland's cause of death resurfaced eight years after his death.
On June 4, 2014, Weiland told Loudwire that he had been clean for 13 years - debunking Filter frontman Richard Patrick's accusation that he was still using substances. But over one year later, he was found dead amid his band's tour.
How Did Scott Weiland Die?
Scott Weiland & the Wildabouts launched their tour in 2015. On December 3 of the same year, they were scheduled to perform at the Medina Entertainment Center in Medina, Minn., but he was found dead.
The authorities received a call about an unresponsive male "in a recreational motor vehicle." They found the man, identified as Weiland, dead upon their arrival at the scene.
According to initial reports, the musician highly likely died in his sleep. They were dismissed by the toxicology results issued by the Hennepin County Medical Examiners two weeks after his death, stating that Weiland died from an accidental overdose of cocaine, alcohol and methylenedioxyamphetamine (MDA) - a drug similar to ecstasy.
Police responded to his tour bus bedroom also found a small amount of cocaine at the scene; his bassist, Tommy Black, was also arrested at that time for suspected possession of drugs.
Weiland also had other health conditions at the time of his death, including asthma, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and multi-substance dependence.
Scott Weiland Remembered After His Death
Following Weiland's sudden and tragic death, musicians and other personalities in the industry honored him in heartfelt tributes.
His former bandmates in Stone Temple Pilots issued a statement on Facebook in which they expressed their gratitude for Weiland for sharing his life with them.
"Together we crafted a legacy of music that has given so many people happiness and great memories," the statement continued. "The memories are many and they run deep for us. We know amidst the good and the bad you struggled, time and time again. It's what made you who you were. You were gifted beyond words, Scott."
Prior to his death, Weiland had been open about his drug and alcohol abuse. He was convicted several times for different charges, including buying crack cocaine, DUI and heroin possession.
He checked himself into rehab in 1998 but went through several relapses in the years thereafter, claiming that he removed the substances for good in 2002.
