    Music Times, like so many other music publications, was looking to publish a "Best of 2013" playlist. We met to discuss what such a playlist should include, and that's where we ran into trouble. We couldn't agree. Sometimes two of us just couldn't agree on whether the performer was amazing or terrible, and even when we agreed they were amazing, we couldn't agree on what track was most representative of their work.

    Just eight days remain until Christmas, and since this series is titled after the 12 Days of Christmas, how about we look at the traditional carol based off the ultimate Christmas countdown? Originally written as a traditional carol in the 18th century, "The Twelve Days of Christmas" has an unknown origin (thought to be from France or England) and has become a major holiday player over the years. With cumulative lyrics, the song has lent itself to numerous parodies and covers over the years.

    With nine days remaining until Christmas, it's time to prepare Santa Claus Lane for ol' Saint Nick and look at the best versions of "Here Comes Santa Claus." Originally written and recorded by Gene Autry in 1947, the song became an instant success and classic, peaking at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. Since then, the song has been reimagined and covered countless time, but who's done it the most justice?

  • 12 Days of Christmas: 10 Best Versions of 'Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas'

    For day three, we'll be looking at "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas." Originally done by Judy Garland for the 1944 musical Meet Me in St. Louis, the track actually tells the story of a family who won't be able to spend time together for the holidays due to a job promotion in New York. It's a somber reality of the holiday, but not necessarily the most joyful... All the history aside, who does the best "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas?" Check out the 10 best versions below.

  • 12 Days of Christmas: 11 Best Versions of 'Sleigh Ride'

    For day two, we'll continue the countdown to the happiest day of the year with the classical wintery piece "Sleigh Ride." Originally composed by Leroy Anderson in 1946 recorded as an orchestral piece, complete with horse clop sound effects and that wonderous "clap!", the song first got a classical recording in 1950. The year before, 1949, the song was given the vocal treatment the followingyear by The Andrews Sister. Though not technically a Christmas song, it's hard not to associate this snowy track with the holiday season.

    First, we're going to kick things off with the 12 best cover versions of the most covered Christmas song of all time, fittingly titled: "The Christmas Song." Originally recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946, the track was already redone by Cole again in '53. Since then, it has been recorded countless times and remains a holiday standard to this day. But who has done it the most justice?
