    As part of their Legacy Project, GQ spoke with 19 musicians who they believe left a lasting mark on the industry in 2014. On the EDM side of things, they spoke with Diplo (born Thomas Wesley Pentz). The influential producer/DJ dished on his beef with Taylor Swift fans, his relationship with Lorde, the role of labels in the industry today, his approach to music, L.A.'s thriving underground music scene, Odd Future's staying power, working with Madonna, being in the tabloids, how he chooses collaborators, and more. Here's some of what we learned:
  • J. Cole Engaged To Longtime Girlfriend Melissa Holt?

    J. Cole is reportedly engaged to his longtime girlfriend Melissa Heholt, HotNewHipHop reports. The Fayetteville, North Carolina rapper hasn't spoken much about their relationship in the media, but the two reportedly first met when attending St. John's University in Queens, New York, and have been together throughout his ascent to fame. Cole reported asked her to marry him with a four-carat diamond ring.

    Experimental singer-songwriter Misty Boyce got her start backing artists such as Ingrid Michaelson, The Naked Brothers Band and most recently, Sara Bareilles, on stage but now it's Boyce's turn to be front and center. A formally trained and highly versatile artist in her own right, Boyce followed up her debut album with her second full-length, 'The Life.' The album is out today on Bandcamp. Ahead of its release, we caught up with Boyce to talk about inspirations behind the album, her favorite memories on tour with Sara Bareilles, adjusting to life in L.A. after moving from New York, and more. Here's what she had to say:

    Last June, sister trio Haim promised their new album would be ready "very soon" and confirmed that they had intended to start recording in July. In November, Alana Haim uploaded a photo of Danielle Haim on guitar with the caption "S S Studio." Now a new photo has surfaced, confirming that the band is recording with producer Ariel Rechtshaid. Este Haim posted the photo, which features Rechtshaid hard at work on a computer with a poster of David Bowie in the background. "Here we go again everybody," she wrote in the caption. "Uh ohz." Looks like new music is officially underway.

    Sunday night marked the ten-year anniversary of The Game's debut album The Documentary, and the Compton rapper celebrated the occasion with a star-studded concert at The Belasco Theater in Los Angeles. According to Rap-Up, he performed his classics such as "Hate It or Love It" and "How We Do" and was joined on stage by friends and collaborators including Kendrick Lamar ("Westside Story"), Tyga, Ab-Soul, O.T. Genasis ("CoCo"), Marsha Ambrosius ("Start from Scratch"), and ScHoolboy Q ("Higher").
  • Taylor Swift Subject Of New Song By Geoff Ong [EXCLUSIVE PREMIERE]

    Neo-soul singer-songwriter Geoff Ong is prepping the release of his upcoming effort, The Boston EP. Originally hailing from Auckland, New Zealand, and a mechanical engineer by trade, Ong found local success with his first self-produced EP, Pictures. He later decided that music was his true calling and left his job to move to Boston where he studied at Berklee College of Music.
  • Disclosure, AlunaGeorge Being Sued By Songwriter Claiming They Stole Her Lyrics

    Disclosure are among a group of artists being sued by an unknown East London songwriter who claims to have written lyrics to their songs. Katie Farrah Sopher is seeking £200,000 ($303,351) over claims that the electronic sibling duo took lyrics from a songbook of hers that was stolen by a "violent" ex-boyfriend, Sean Sawyers in 2009, who then passed it along to music industry contacts. The songs in question are Disclosure's "Latch," featuring Sam Smith, "White Noise," and "You and Me" featuring Eliza Dolittle. Sopher is also suing Alungeorge over claims that she wrote lyrics to their hit song "Attracting Flies." Alunageorge's Aluna Francis also sang vocals on Disclosure's aforementioned "White Noise."
  • Sophia Grace's "Best Friends" Lands On Billboard Hot 100, Gets Remix From Y//2//K [LISTEN]

    After dropping her new single "Best Friends" last week, YouTube/Ellen star Sophia Grace has officially landed on Billboard's Hot 100 chart, debuting at No. 87. The video for the single has already gone viral with nearly six million views. Now oddball producer Y//2//K has reimagined the 11-year-old's DJ Mustard-esque anthem as a darker, bass heavy club banger. He also manages to improve her vocals, making her sound a bit more mature. It almost makes you forget she was singing the song in the toy aisle of a Kmart for her video.
  • Chris Brown Probation Revoked Following Night Club Shooting, New Progress Hearing Scheduled For March

    Since being released from jail in July, Chris Brown dropped a new album, performed at some awards shows, made a cameo at the ESPYs, and started and squashed beefs, among other things. However, trouble seems to just follow the guy. In August, Suge Knight was shot multiple times at his Party in Los Angeles and earlier this month, five people were shot at a private party, where he was performing in San Jose. Now the "Loyal" crooner's probation has been revoked in connection to the recent nightclub shooting. By performing out of Los Angeles County, Brown violated a provision in his probation forbidding him to leave the area. Brown also has yet to complete his 200 hours of community service, the Los Angeles Times reports.

    Mackenzie Shivers was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, but is now a staple of the New York City music circuit. She began writing music at the age of four and studied classical piano at Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music in Nashville, where she earned a degree in music composition and theory. From there she honed her craft into the folk-pop sound she has today. She's often compared to Joni Mitchell and '90s-era Jewel, but her piano-driven songs are very much her own style.
  • Sleater-Kinney's Celebrity Friends Ellen Page, Natasha Lyonne, Andy Samberg & More Sing Along To "No Cities To Love," 'Broad City' Stars To Interview The Band Tonight [WATCH]

    Sleater-Kinney is set to release their comeback album, No Cities To Love, next week and they've enlisted a bunch of famous friends to celebrate in a video for their title track. These famous indie fans sing along to the song via webcam in various cities. It opens with band member Carrie Brownstein's Portlandia partner Fred Armisen playing keyboard on a New York City sidewalk then flashes over to Gerard Way singing in his room. Brie Larson, Natasha Lyonne, Ellen Page, Sarah Silverman, J Mascis, Vanessa Bayer, Miranda July, Norman Reedus, Andy Samberg, Evan Rachel Wood, and band members Corin Tucker, Janet Weiss, and Brownstein also join in on the sing-along.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow, Jimmy Fallon Perform Broadway Versions of Drake, Nicki Minaj, Big Sean Songs [WATCH]

    Gwyneth Paltrow proved she could sing during her stint on Glee and in the film Country Strong. She got back on the mic during her appearance on The Tonight Show alongside Jimmy Fallon, who was "playing" piano. The two teamed up to perform Broadway versions of popular rap songs, including Drake's "Started From The Bottom," Nicki Minaj's "Anaconda" and Big Sean's "I Don't F**k With You." Fallon donned a smoking jacket and Paltrow sported a pink jumpsuit.

In an episode of his new ESPN series with son Cordell Broadus, Snoop & Son: A Dad's Dream, the highly sought after high school wide receiver says he doesn't touch the stuff.

    On his DJ Drama-hosted STN MTN/ Kauai mixtape, Childish Gambino featured Little Rock, Arkansas rapper Kari Faux. He remixed her breakout single "No Small Talk" and has also reportedly signed her. Now the femcee is back with a two-part music video featuring his remix (Gambino makes a cameo) as well as her self-produced track "Gahdamn" off her Laugh Now, Die Later EP.
  • Lorde & Taylor Swift Collaboration? 'Pure Heroine' Singer Addresses The Idea

    By now everyone knows that Taylor Swift and Lorde are besties, but would the two hit makers ever consider collaborating? Both singers have Grammys under their belts. Both have had No. 1 singles. What would happen if they combined forces to make the ultimate pop song? Fans would surely eat it up, and the media would, too. TayLorde has a decent ring to it, right? Well, before you get excited, Lorde has offered up an answer to whether she'd consider writing music with her best bud. In an interview with E!, she said they don't plan to work together anytime soon and has "no idea" if they'll ever collaborate.
  • Ed Sheeran Debuts New Song On Cougar Town's Final Season Premiere [LISTEN]

    The final season of Courtney Cox's Cougar Town premiered on TBS last night and featured a snippet of a new song from Ed Sheeran. Prior to the premiere, Sheeran had tweeted to his U.S. fans that "a brand new never before heard song of mine" would debut on the show. Cox also promoted the new track in a tweet of her own saying, "So excited for you all to hear the new song from my pal @edsheeran tonight."
  • Usher Engaged To Grace Miguel, His Longtime Girlfriend And Manager

    Usher, 36, is engaged to longtime girlfriend and manager Grace Miguel, 44, People reports. The couple have been dating since 2009, following the R&B singer and Voice judge's divorce from ex-wife Tameka Foster to whom he was married from 2007 to 2009. Representatives from the newly engaged couple have yet to confirm the news.
