6 Incredible Songs That Took Lyrics from Other Songs: Radiohead, The White Stripes, and more
There's a very fine line between homage and plagiarism, but these six artists walked that line masterfully when writing the lyrics to these songs. Here are six incredible songs that took lyrics from other songs. -
8 Great Punk Covers of Classic Songs: Minor Threat, Big Black, and more
If an artist does a cover version of a song, but doesn't really change anything about it, then there's not really a point in doing it at all (listen to Seal's version of "Let's Stay Together" and tell me why it had to be made). However, these eight bands took songs by non-punk bands and put their own noisy punk spin of them. -
11 Initial Thoughts On Lana Del Rey's 'West Coast' Video
After pulling the video from Youtube yesterday, Lana Del Rey re-released the video for her single “West Coast” today, and these are all of my thoughts after watching the video just one time. -
6 Artists Who Have Reused Their Lyrics: The Smiths, Bruce Springsteen, and more
A lot of artists get accused of writing the same songs over and over again (AC/DC, the Ramones...), but some artists have literally taken parts of their songs and used them twice. Here are six artists who have recycled their own lyrics. -
7 Artists Who Released Multiple Classic Albums in One Year: Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and more
It’s rare enough for an artist to release just one classic album over the span of their entire career, but somehow, these seven artists managed to release multiple classic albums over the span of a single year. -
6 Bands That Continued After Their Songwriter Left: Misfits, Pink Floyd and more
It's not uncommon for a band to shift personnel every once in a while, but one thing a band rarely survives is the loss of the primary songwriter. However, sometimes a band overcomes this loss and continues making music, and as these six bands proved, this can either an improvement or a horrible mistake. -
9 Incredible Albums with Awful Titles: Green Day, the Beatles and more
There are some albums where everything comes together perfectly: the music, the lyrics, the cover, the title, everything. However, some of the greatest albums of all time were given titles that don't serve the music at all. Here are nine great albums that were given awful titles. -
Prince's 10 Dirtiest Lyrics
After nearly 40 years in the music business, Prince revealed yesterday that he would no longer be cursing in his songs. Of course, bad words aren't even close to being the most scandalous part of Prince's songs. Here's a sampling of some of Prince's dirtiest lyrics. -
Concert Review: Slint at the Bowery Ballroom [May 4, 2014]
Nobody checked my ticket last night at the Bowery Ballroom. I held mine out at the front entrance, but the people there were just checking IDs and giving out 21+ wristbands. At the entrance to the bar, where the tickets were actually being scanned, I simply walked right in without anyone seeing me or telling me what to do. So even though I had a ticket, I could have easily snuck into the Bowery Ballroom last night to see Slint. -
5 Bands Who Hit Their Stride After Adding a New Member: Nirvana, Rush, and more
Any musician can tell you about inexplicable musical chemistry. There are some people, who for one reason or another, just bring out the best in your playing and writing. Lennon and McCartney had this chemistry together, but some bands don't find this chemistry until after they've started making music. Here are five bands that hit their stride only after adding someone new to the line-up. -
6 Musicians Who Became Side Members in Other Bands: Robert Smith, David Bowie and more
Once an artist is established as the primary force in a successful band, it's pretty rare to see them join another band as a sort of background figure, but these six artists did exactly that. Here are six artists who became sidemen in other bands. -
6 Bands That Were Backing Bands for Other Artists: The Eagles, the Band, and more
The ideal career for most bands it to achieve success by playing their own songs, but some bands have very successfully performed as backing bands for other well-known artists. Here are six bands who did just that. -
6 Incredible Songs with Bizarre Song Structures: The Beatles, the Smiths, and more
If you listen to a lot of pop and rock music like I do, you've probably noticed that most songs are similarly structured. They more or less go verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus, and in three minutes, you're out. A million great songs have been written this way, but some artists like to explore alternative song structures, often with great success. Here are six great songs with bizarre structures. -
6 Famous Musicians Accused of Racism: Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and more
In an email sent to Pitchfork yesterday, drummer Kliph Scurlock explained why he was fired from the Flaming Lips, blaming singer Wayne Coyne and accusing him of racism. In our increasingly progressive society, accusations of racism are thrown around quite often, and as this story shows, even great musicians are subject to it. Here are six other great artists who have been accused of racism. -
Concert Review: Cat Circus in Bloomfield, NJ, 5/2/14
Like a great number of "venues" in New Jersey, the Cat Circus is just the basement of a house rented out by college students, but it's definitely the cleanest, most organized college house I've ever set foot in. The original bill for this show/birthday party/vegan BBQ consisted of eight acts, which is three or four more than is usually recommended for a house show, but two of the acts ended up not playing, which I'm sure the neighbors were quite thankful for. -
11 Initial Thoughts on the Black Keys' 'Fever' Video
The Black Keys released the video for their new single “Fever” today, from their upcoming album Turn Blue. Here are my impressions of the video after watching it just one time. -
9 Great Songs That Sound Out of Place On Their Albums: Nirvana, PJ Harvey and more
Though an album where every song is pretty much the same won’t be very good (unless you’re the Ramones), the songs on an album should at least feel like it they all came from the same place. These nine songs, however, sound like they were placed on the wrong album entirely. Here are nine great songs that sound out of place on their albums. -
5 Bands Who Only Got Famous After Breaking Up: The Velvet Underground, Big Star, Slint and more
Thousands of bands form every year, but unfortunately most of them don't ever achieve significant commercial success. These five bands, however, somehow managed to achieve their greatest popularity only after they had broken up. -
7 Song Mistakes That Were Intentionally Left In: The Beatles, R.E.M., and more
The beauty of recording is that you can delete all of the mistakes until you have a perfect song, but any good musicians will tell you that sometimes, mistakes are the most interesting parts of a song. Here are seven great songs with mistakes that were intentionally left in. -
7 Great Indie Rock Albums with Creepy Artwork: Devendra Banhart, Ty Segall, and more
Heavy metal albums usually have some awesomely terrifying artwork (when they’re not busy being totally awful), but they’re not the only albums capable of creeping you out with their covers. Here are seven of the creepiest album covers from indie rock artists. -
6 Artists Who Never Went Solo (But Should): Carrie Brownstein, Michael Stipe, and more
With the release of Damon Albarn's first solo LP Everyday Robots, I've started thinking about other artists who have been in the music game for a long time, but have never chosen to go solo. Here are six artists that I would love to hear solo albums from. -
7 Album Covers That Don't Match the Music: Pink Floyd, Neil Young, and more
A good album cover should compliment the music inside, and a lot of covers do this very well. The ethereal cover of My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless matches the album’s ethereal music, but some album covers suggest something completely different than what the music actually offers. Here are seven album covers that don’t match the album’s music. -
6 Musical Biopics That Were Criticized by Their Subjects: 'Walk The Line,' 'The Doors,' 'Notorious' and more
The new Jimi Hendrix biopic All is By My Side, starring Outkast’s Andre Benjamin, has generated considerable criticism from Hendrix’s estate, which opposes any film about Hendrix’s life produced without their participation. This type of controversy surrounding a biopic is nothing new, however. Here are six biopics of musicians that were criticized by their subjects. http://www.musictimes.com/articles/5787/20140429/jimi-hendrix-biopic-gets-new-release-date.htm -
5 Albums That Nearly Broke Up the Band
Bands can break up for a wide variety of reasons, but these five bands nearly came to an end over the creation of a specific album in their catalogues. Here are five albums that nearly broke up the band. -
Concert Review: The Meatlocker in Montclair, New Jersey
Shows at the Meatlocker in Montclair, NJ sit somewhere in between basement shows and legitimate venue shows. Technically it’s the basement to an apartment building, but I’m pretty sure nobody who lives in the apartment actually goes down into that cold, filthy space. Anyone can rent out the space for the night and put on a show, and while big acts such as Ted Leo, Wavves, and Screaming Females have played there, most nights it’s just a bunch of small, scrappy punk bands playing for a couple of people, like the show I went to last night. -
7 Songs Written About Ex-Bandmates: Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and more
Being in a band can be stressful work. Sometimes this can lead to vicious disputes between bandmates or untimely departures from the band, and because these are musicians we're talking about, songs are inevitably written about these tensions. These seven songs were written about estranged or long lost bandmates. -
6 Great Albums That Had Delayed Releases: The Beatles, Neil Young, and more
Most albums don’t take very long to be released after they’ve finished production, but there are some albums that had difficult journeys towards their release date, whether it was due to label intervention or the band simply being unsatisfied. Here are six great albums that were subjected to delayed release dates. -
8 Incredible Albums That Are Extremely Short: Misfits, Minor Threat, and more
A few days ago I wrote an article about incredible albums that would be better if they simply didn’t go on for so long. These eight albums I’ve listed here today have the opposite problem: they’re maddeningly brief. The term “long play record” can be used very loosely to describe these albums. -
7 Compilation Albums Definitely Worth Owning: The Smiths, The Supremes, and more
In the increasingly hip world of indie/alternative fans, compilations albums are almost blasphemous. Why would you buy Radiohead: The Best Of, when each Radiohead album is a masterwork? However, some artists are best appreciated when heard in the context of a well-constructed compilation album. Here are seven compilation albums that are definitely worth owning. -
7 Classic Albums That Would Improve with Different Production: Paul Simon, Oasis and more
Though I wrote a list a few weeks ago about classic albums that sound awful, I wouldn’t change a thing about the way any of those albums were produced. When I sit down and listen to Raw Power, I want it to be rough and fuzzy, because that’s the kind of music the Stooges made. These seven albums, however, would have greatly benefited from a production overhaul.
