8 Albums That Omit Great Songs On Some Editions: The Strokes, The Smiths, And More
When a band achieves international success, their albums are often re-released in different countries with bonus tracks, or sometimes with altered tracklistings. These eight albums, however, have incredible songs that, for one reason or another, aren't included on every edition. -
6 Great Albums That Are Front-Loaded: Talking Heads, St. Vincent, And More
Sequencing an album is a tricky process. If you place all of the weakest songs at the beginning, the listeners might not make it to the end. If you place all of your best songs at the beginning, however, the rest of the album is going to be disappointing. Here are six great albums whose track listings were front-loaded, with all of the best songs in the beginning. -
12 Initial Thoughts On Cut Copy's 'Meet Me In A House Of Love' Video
Today, Cut Copy shared the video for its song "Meet Me in a House of Love," from its most recent album Free Your Mind. Here are my thoughts on the video after watching it just one time. -
6 Musicians Who Became Famous Producers: Brian Eno, Dr. Dre, And More
Plenty of musicians eventually try their hand at producing, since it's pretty hard to record music in a studio without learning a thing or two about production. However, these six artists proved to be such talented producers that they made a second career out of it. Here are six musicians who became famous record producers. -
9 Albums With A Theme In Their Song Titles: Radiohead, Bon Iver, and more
Many albums are written with themes or concepts that run through all of the songs, but some artists chose to place their themes right into the song titles. Here are nine albums with a theme in their song titles. -
7 Rock Stars Who Also Write Classical Music: Paul McCartney, Frank Zappa, And More
I once had a teacher who said that if you understand classical music, you wouldn't listen to anything else. That's obviously a wild exaggeration and completely pompous, and as these seven musicians proved, it is completely possible to love both classical and rock music. Here are seven rock stars that also write classical music. -
5 Artists Who Became Songwriters After They Debuted: Michael Jackson, the Rolling Stones, and more
Just because someone's an excellent performer doesn't mean they're an excellent songwriter as well. Some artists are talented enough to have debuted as both excellent performers and songwriters, such as the Beatles, but some artists were only comfortable writing their own material after they were established as performers. Here are five artists who eventually became great songwriters after they debuted. -
8 Song Titles That Are Homages To Other Songs: The Smiths, Radiohead, and more
In choosing song titles or band names, it's not uncommon for an artist to reference other works of art, such as books or films, and sometimes they even reference other songs. Here are eight song titles that are homages to other songs. -
Concert Review: Hologram City in Hackensack, NJ, 6/14/14
Continuing the long line of New Jersey basement venues with awesome names is Hologram City in Hackensack. Though most basement shows I've been to take place in the middle of quiet residential neighborhoods, complete with disgruntled neighbors who love calling the cops, Hologram City sits right at the corner of a busy intersection and even has its own (small) parking lot, which makes it a great location for a venue. The show I attended there last night was titled "Basement Maneuvers - An Electronic Evening," and as that name suggests, it was an evening of performances by electronic artists. Though I've been to plenty of shows featuring electronic artists, and have even played with some myself, I'd never been to an entirely electronic show before, so the atmosphere and flow of the evening was very new to me. -
5 Great Alt-Rock Songs About Real Crimes: Nirvana, At The Drive-In, and more
Though few things are as horrific and stomach churning as violent crime, there's still an undeniably fascinating element to it when viewed from a distance, which makes for some interesting subject matter for songs. Here are five great alt-rock songs about real crimes. -
8 Great Songs With Fake-Out Endings: The Beatles, Depeche Mode, and more
Just like some movies have an extra scene after the end credits, some songs take a similarly experimental approach with their conclusions, by making the listeners think they've finished when they actually haven't. Here are eight great songs with fake-out endings. -
Concert Review: John Ryle House in Haledon, NJ, 6/13/14
Basement shows rarely ever run smoothly on a normal day, but having a show on Friday the 13th almost guarantees that nothing will go right. Despite the date, however, the show I attended last night at the John Ryle House in Haledon, NJ was one of the most efficient and pleasant basement shows I've ever been to. For starters, the show only started 25 minutes late, instead of the usual 90 minutes. -
5 Lead Singles That Misrepresent Their Albums: The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, and more
Choosing an album's lead single can be tricky. It should be a great song (but not the album's best) that accurately represents the sound of the album as a whole. However, these five artists chose lead singles for their albums that didn't quite sound like the album's other songs. Here are five lead singles that misrepresent their albums. -
6 Great Songs Blamed For Awful Things: The Beatles, Fela Kuti, and more
Even though music exists to bring joy into people's lives, there are still some incredible songs that have influenced (or have been blamed for) great tragedies. Here are six songs that have been blamed for awful things. -
5 Alt-Rock Albums With Multiple Cover Songs: Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, and more
When an artist performs a cover song, especially alternative or punk artists, it's usually reserved for live shows or as a bonus track for an album, but on rare occasions these cover songs make their way into the album's proper tracklisting. However, even more rare is when an artist includes multiple cover songs on a single album. Here are five alternative rock albums with more than one cover song (excluding cover albums, of course). -
5 Artists Whose Music Got Weirder As Their Fame Grew: Kanye West, Radiohead, and more
When an artist is struggling to find an audience, or if it wants to keep the audience it already has, there's always the temptation to "sell out" and soften its sound in order to maximize mainstream accessibility. However, these five artists did just the opposite by remaining popular even as their music became more bizarre. -
5 Singers With Little (Or No) Experience With Instruments: Morrissey, Ozzy Osbourne, and more
If someone wants to become a musician, the very first step most people take is learning an instrument. However, these five singers found incredible fame and success, despite the fact that they have very little experience (or in some cases, no experience at all) playing a musical instrument. -
6 Albums That Sound Totally Different From Their Predecessors: Springsteen, Blur, and more
Most artists worth listening to tend to slightly change up their style with each release, and sometimes this results in the artist sounding completely different today than it did when it first started (hello, Radiohead). However, some artists forego this gradual transformation and instead entirely change their sound with just one album. Here are six albums that sound totally different from the one that came before it. -
13 Initial Impressions Of Nicki Minaj's "Pills N Potions" Video
Today, Nicki Minaj released the video for her song "Pills N Potions," a single from her upcoming album The Pink Print. Here are my initial impressions of the video after watching it just one time. -
6 Great Albums Named After Their Worst Song: The Smiths, Bob Dylan, And More
When an album is named after a particular track, there's an unspoken expectation that this track will be somehow exceptional, and one of the album's best. However, these six albums were named after songs that ended being their weakest. -
6 Great Songs With Solos On Unusual Instruments: Simon & Garfunkel, The Replacements, and more
In rock and pop songs, most solos are played on guitar or keyboard, though occasionally the bassist and drummer gets chances to shine. However, these six artists chose pretty unconventional instruments (for rock and pop music, anyway) to play them on. Here are six great songs with solos on unusual instruments. -
5 Underrated Follow-Ups To Classic Albums: Pink Floyd, Green Day, and more
Releasing a classic album is both a blessing and a curse for a musician. It may feel great to have created something that people love, but you're also faced with the massive pressure of following it up. Some artists are able to follow their classics with more classics, but most of the time these follow-ups albums are seen as disappointments. These five albums had the misfortune of being released after classics, but are much better than they're given credit for. -
6 Great Alt-Rock Musicians Who Can't Sing: Wayne Coyne, J Mascis, and more
One of the greatest things about punk and alternative music is its embrace of imperfection. Even though most alt-rock singers couldn't pass the first round of American Idol, their voices are often uniquely powerful and captivating. However, these six singers have voices that are too rough even for some alt-rock fans. -
5 Great Alt-Rock Bands Whose Line-Ups Never Changed: The Strokes, Radiohead, and more
If a band lasts longer than a few years, there's an excellent chance that someone's going to leave or get kicked out, and if it lasts long enough, this could become a frequent occurrence. However, these five bands somehow managed to maintain a consistent line-up for their entire careers. -
8 Songs That Were Last Minute Additions To Classic Albums: Prince, Bruce Springsteen, and more
There's no way of knowing how many classic songs we'll never get to hear. Maybe the writers don't think they're good enough to release, or maybe they never received the right publicity. These eight songs came very close to never being heard, and were only included on their albums at the last minute. -
Concert Review: The Dopeness in Jersey City, 6/6/14
Though I've performed music in Jersey City before, I'd never gotten a true sense of the city's tight-knit art scene until I visited last night for a three-act show at the Dopeness, a Mexican restaurant with a performance space in the back room. As Steve Donahue of Young Legs described Jersey City to me, it's like "Brooklyn, but less smelly and terrifying." Ever since neighboring Hoboken became too stiflingly gentrified to support an arts community (its legendary venue Maxwell's closed last year), Jersey City has proven itself to be a worthy alternative for Hudson County, and all of North Jersey for that matter. -
6 Incredible Artists Who Started Off As Drummers: Frank Zappa, Jack White, and more
Though plenty of musicians choose one instrument when starting out and stick to it (I know I have), these six artists all started off on drums before becoming renowned for something else. Here are six incredible musicians who started off as drummers. -
7 Great Alt-Rock Songs Where The Lead Vocalist Doesn't Sing: Oasis, The White Stripes, and more
For most bands, one of their most identifiable aspects is the sound of the lead singer's voice. However, every once in a while another band member will step out in front and take the lead, sometimes even at the suggestion of the lead singer. Here are seven greatest alt-rock songs where someone else in the band sings lead. -
6 Albums Intended To Be The Artist's Last: R.E.M., Jay-Z, and more
It's not very often that an artist or band can plan its final album. Most of the time, the band unexpectedly splits, or someone unexpectedly passes away, turning its most recent album into its last, even if it wasn't meant to be. However, these six albums were actually recorded with the intention of being the artist's last. Whether or not the artist actually kept this promise, though, is another story. -
8 Pairs Of Bands With The Same (Or Similar) Names: Nirvana, Death, and more
Though two bands having similar names was understandable in the past, when you couldn't just Google your own name to see if it's been taken, there's no excuse for this in the Internet age, and yet it still occasionally happens. Here are eight pairs of bands with the same (or similar) names.
