Tech N9ne Annoucnes Tour Promoting New Album 'Special Effects'; Murs and Chris Webby Opening
Tech N9ne will be releasing Special Effects during the first week of May, and although we haven't seen a tracklist yet, the Kansas City emcee has already booked a full list of tour dates. The rapper—joined by Murs, Chris Webby, King 810 (notable for being a metal band, not a hip-hop group), ZUSE and of course his buddy Krizz Kaliko—will cram nearly 50 dates into less than two months. -
Megadeth Names Lamb of God's Chris Adler as New Drummer for Forthcoming Release; Is A Guitarist Next?
Megadeth has confirmed at least one new member for the recording of its new album, declaring this week that Lamb of God's Chris Adler would step behind the kit. There's no word on whether he'll be able to continue on tour with the group, as his primary band is reportedly working on a new album as well, but it's a good start for the thrash icons. -
LaBelle's 'Lady Marmalade': 40 Years of Covers, from All Saints to Leona Lewis to Christina Aguilera, Pink and Lil Kim
LaBelle and its one smash hit, "Lady Marmalade," went to no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 40 years ago, the last time that the group would reach that peak, and indeed, de facto frontwoman Patti LaBelle would only hit the spot once more, with "On My Own." The single gathered acclaim and notoriety (and continues to do so to this day), because of its racy French catcall: "Voulez-vous coucher aver moi (ce soir)?" or "Do you want to sleep with me (tonight)?" The track would only hold the no. 1 position for one week, but left enough of a lasting impact to land at no. 479 on Rolling Stone's list of the greatest songs of all time, and a score of covers, in its wake. -
'High Minded' and Low Bass: Tim Storms, Saint-Saëns and Enya Get Lower Than Hip-Hop and Dubstep Ever Could
Bass gets a bad rap in music, usually seen as a destroyer of stereos or a noise complaint to the police waiting to happen. Two clever engineering students at George Mason University used the power of sub-bass to their advantage however, channeling its waves into an experimental rendition of fire extinguisher, using the low audio waves to put out fires. They weren't the first to incorporate sub-bass in a "high-minded" way. Hector Berlioz, Camille Saint-Saens and Enya are among our examples. -

Kendrick Lamar Lands "King Kunta," Five Other Tracks Hot 100...But None in Top 50. Why Not?
Mark Ronson, Bruno Mars and "Uptown Funk" have had an iron grip on the Billboard Hot 100 for the last few months, but Kendrick Lamar made the biggest splash perhaps last week, by landing six tracks into the top 100 songs in the country, to go along with repping the no. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with To Pimp A Butterfly. -
O.T. Genasis and Immortal Technique Arrested in Los Angeles. No, 'CoCo' Was Not Involved
Rapper O.T. Genasis was arrested in Los Angeles on Friday night but the charges are much more mundane than you might think/hope. The emcee, best known for his hit "CoCo" and for openly professing his love of cocaine, was taken in for running a red light. -

Freddie Mercury Movie: Sacha Baron Cohen WON'T Be Playing Queen Frontman, According to Brian May
Queen guitarist Brian May revealed Sunday night to crestfallen film fans that Sacha Baron Cohen would not be playing frontman Freddie Mercury in a biopic after all, despite earlier reports that he had returned to the project. Multiple media outlets, including Music Times, were thrown for a loop when the band's manager, Jim Beach, reportedly reported the news. The longtime band member clarified that Beach's quote at the Artist & Management Awards in London was that Cohen would play "all four major roles," obviously a bit of jest that the original reporting outlet either failed to understand or ignored. -
7 Highest Priced Records on eBay Right Now: The Beatles, Elvis Presley and...Minor Threat?
Jack White made headlines last week when he announced that he was the bidder who spent $300,000 for the acetate of Elvis Presley's original single, a 7" pressing from Sun Records featuring "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin," and that his label Third Man Records would be releasing copies of the recording for Record Store Day 2015. That inspired us to check out what the highest-priced albums on eBay were at the moment, and readers ate it up, so we've decided to try it again, looking at every LP priced at more than $1,000 on the online auction site at the moment, which included hot numbers from The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Minor Threat and more. -

Back of The Billboards is a Music Times weekly segment that looks at the opposite end: the new record that finished closest to the back of the Billboard 200 for the previous week. We hope to give a fighting chance to the bands you haven't heard of. This week we look at 'Liv and Maddie,' the soundtrack album for the Disney show of the same title, featuring the vocals of star Dove Cameron. -

MSNBC Apologizes for Guest's 'Let's Go Kill Some Muslims' Comment Regarding Country Music
A guest commenter on the MSNBC program Now With Alex Wagner came on a little hot when she declared that "nothing says 'let's go kill some Muslims' like country music." Madonna's 'Rebel Heart' Drops 19 Places on Billboard 200; Is Album Leak or Aging Fan Base to Blame?
Analysts were surprised when the Empire soundtrack trumped Madonna's Rebel Heart on the Billboard 200, although it managed to take the no. 1 position on the actual albums chart. Even more surprising is how poorly the album has done going forward in its second week. Rebel debuted by selling around 117,000 copies during its first week but immediately dropped to 22,800 copies during its second week, dropping more than 80 percent and 14 places on the Albums chart. More dramatically, the record fell from no. 2 to no. 21 on the Billboard 200. -
Stevie Wonder and 5 Other Artists Banned in Apartheid South Africa: The Beatles, Pink Floyd and More
Stevie Wonder was a political lighting rod during 1985, and most of it was tied to politics in another nation: The pianist was arrested during a South African Apartheid protest outside of Congress and later would dedicate his Best Original Song Oscar (which he won for "I Just Called to Say I Love You" from The Woman in Red) to Nelson Mandela, who remained imprisoned at Pollsmoor Prison. That action led the South African government to ban all of Wonder's music across the board. He wasn't the first musician to deal with censorship from the paranoid Apartheid government however. Here are five other acts, including Pink Floyd and The Beatles, that got banned. -
'The Fast and The Furious': Ranking The 7 Soundtracks...Featuring Ludacris, Pitbull, Iggy Azalea and Plenty More
Last week featured the release of the soundtrack for 'Furious 7,' the final installment in the 'Fast and Furious' film franchise. Your correspondent admits that he wasn't a huge fan of the first edition when it debuted during 2001. He's since warmed up to the series as the films have started to feature more and more absurd stunts, and more and more Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. The final film, which premieres in theaters next week, looks to be a proper, adrenaline-fueled final chapter and a fitting tribute to Paul Walker. One thing that hasn't necessarily gotten better as the films have progressed: The soundtrack albums. Music Times ranks the seven film companion albums from worst rides to best. -
Sleeping With Sirens, Mark Knopfler and Awolnation Crack Albums Chart Top 10 with New Releases; Kendrick Lamar Still on Top
The good news about the albums chart is that it gives performers who didn't crack the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 to make their stand without worrying about streams and singles, but that will still have to wait until after Kendrick Lamar's 'To Pimp A Butterfly.' The rapper's third album, and first to top the albums chart, sold 319,000 copies, nearly quadrupling the next highest total on the list. -
Kendrick Vs. Everybody: How Did 'To Pimp A Butterfly' Sell Compared to Recents from Kanye West, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj and More?
Kendrick Lamar was certainly king of the Billboard 200 this week, as To Pimp A Butterfly sold three times as many copies as any other record on the market during the last week. Part of the hip-hop game, more so than any other genre, is arguing about who's no. 1. Generally that means a ranking of who can drop the best bars, but money—regardless of what Jay Z and Jermaine Dupri tell you—is most certainly a thang. So how does the most hyped performer in recent years stack up against industry giants in terms of sales? -

5 Surprising Hip-Hop Ghostwriters: Will Smith, Dr. Dre and Jim Jones Had Curious Helpers with These Hits
The hot news in hip-hop today is the rumor that Compton rapper Skeme may have ghostwritten songs for Iggy Azalea, including "Fancy," the no. 4 song of 2014. This news probably surprises no one, despite denials from the performer herself and mentor T.I. that anyone else had a hand in crafting her hits. And if anyone is that shocked or appalled by the news...perhaps they should check out the history of hip-hop. You'll be surprised at how many songs are actually written by the least likely of performers. Here are just a few examples. -

Zayn Malik has announced that he's leaving One Direction, a declaration that Directioners have been fearing for weeks, following in the rumors of his infidelity and general dissatisfaction. Here are five cases of major members leaving a boy group and what happened afterward. Featuring One Direction, NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and more. -
