  • Clear Channel and CMT enter partnership amid growth of country music market

Based entirely on the number of hits we get writing about various genres of music, we can attest that the country market is one of the most active in both the consumption of music and media coverage related to that genre. Clear Channel Communications must've noticed the same thing because they just announced a deal with cable television network CMT. The partnership will involve the two companies developing and sharing programming together.
  • DJ Elle Morgan impresses Steve Aoki, curates own nightclub, at age of 13

It's easy to forget how young some of our favorite performers are when they enter the music world. From Michael Jackson's Jack 5 debut at the age of 11, to Lorde's chart-topping single "Royals" at the age of 16, it doesn't take much life experience to make a splash in the music industry. Tuesdays Under 21 is a Music Times feature dedicated to bringing attention to talented musicians and performers under the age of 21. Who knows? They just might be the next big thing.
  • Blur pulls out of Big Day Out via Facebook post, leaves fans and organizers baffled

We knew a guy back in the day that broke up with his girlfriend via Facebook. Not even a message, just changed his relationship status and let her figure it out. We gave him crap for months on end, and it was well-deserved. Blur may be in for similar treatment from concert organizers and Australian fans after they pulled out of Auckland's Big Day Out Festival by posting a message on their own Facebook page. Essentially, concert organizers found out at the same time we did.
  • Rock in Rio coming to United States? New half-owner SFX Entertainment hopes so

Slow and surely wins the race. This isn't a mantra that Robert Sillerman and SFX Entertainment abide by. As Music Times has reported during previous weeks, the electronic music promoter has been making frequent purchases and adding to its budding empire, including Made Event (the organizer of New York's Electric Zoo Festival) and Germany's i-Motion last week. The biggest announcement came over the weekend when the company announced that it had purchased a 50 percent ownership stake in Rock in Rio, one of the world's largest music festivals.
  • G-Dragon big winner at Mnet Asian Music Awards; Stevie Wonder, Ylvis, Icona Pop perform

No matter whether he's starring in a new music video, starring in one of his buddy's music videos, or appearing in Los Angeles with Missy Elliott, G-Dragon is an attention grabber. That factor, along with a significant amount of talent, led the Korean performer to winning four prizes at Mnet Asian Music Awards, held in Hong Kong over the weekend.
  • Waka Flocka Flame announces new album 'Flockaveli Psychotics,' combining hip-hop and EDM, for 2014

Waka Flocka Flame seems to have been inspired by his current touring host, EDM producer Steve Aoki. The rapper is currently supporting Aoki on his "Aokify America" tour, as well as playing alongside other electronic musician Borgore in the supporting slot, which is the probable cause for his declaration that the second chapter in his Flockaveli series will combine EDM and hip-hop music.
  • NME Awards 2014 enter into a partnership with Austin, Texas

No doubt the acronym NME brings up thoughts of the U.K. for you, if you like to keep an eye on what those folks across the pond are up to in the studio (it's certainly Music Times' first stop for Britrock news). You will be curious then, as we were, when you hear that NME has entered a partnership with the city of Austin, TX for its NME Awards 2014.
  • Pitchfork releasing quarterly magazine

Pitchfork has had a somewhat secondhand influence on the re-popularization of vinyl, namely by promoting the hip bands that have been the major movers in revitalizing the format (we're not judging; we too prefer our music on big 12-inch discs, maybe just for the larger album art). Now Pitchfork is playing a more major role in what we sentimental journalists hope will be the revitalization of print news publications.
  • T.I. and Grand Hustle imprint sign to Columbia Records

Rapper T.I. had already mentioned that he was looking at labels to put out his forthcoming ninth album as well as sign on his own hip-hop imprint, Grand Hustle Records. The rapper announced on Friday that he and his label would be joining up with Columbia Records. T.I. personally had been signed with Atlantic records since 2003, and his contract ended earlier this year. His last album with the label was Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head, which came out in December 2012.
  • Carrie Underwood 'The Sound of Music' preview clip [LISTEN]

Carrie Underwood fits into the same boat as Taylor Swift in that she's a country artist that has success appealing to the non-country listening populace (read: our father). That success led NBC into casting her as Maria von Trapp in the live broadcast of The Sound of Music, which will air on December 5. NBC has released a one-minute clip of its star singing the title song from the musical.
  • Jay Z, Dr. Dre, Rick Ross under fire from gospel group

Copyright infringement is nothing new to music, particularly hip-hop. Every day it seems there's a new lawsuit alleging that some producer or rapper has borrowed unfairly, with the original owner suing for royalties, or whatever they're owed. Today's example may be less about the money and more about the divine consequences of the sample.
  • Marc Anthony, Draco Rosa and Carlos Vives win big prizes at Latin Grammys

Predicting the Grammys is hard, because less often does the actual best song win. The best bet is to make a political choice, using logic to reason out why one artist is more likely to win than another. The Latin Grammys are even tougher, because A) We don't speak Spanish and B) we're not as familiar with the music or the behind-the-scenes shenanigans. Therefore we at Music Times are PROUD to have gotten one out of three predictions correct for the major prizes.
  • Juanes, Alejandro Sanz, Ricky Martin and Laura Pausini perform in Latin Grammys tribute to Miguel Bosé

The Latin Grammys will take place tonight at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, where all of Latin music's most noteworthy honors will be given out amongst an impressive collection of performers and performances from across the world of Spanish music. One award is traditionally given away during a separate ceremony the night before however, and on Wednesday, Miguel Bosé was presented with the Person of The Year Award.
  • R. Kelly and 'Sex Dolphin' get remixed to include backing track [LISTEN]

    R. Kelly has been all over the news in the last week, both for his forthcoming album Black Panties and the racy content/album art on the record. Nothing has gone more viral than the songs he improvised for Rolling Stone yesterday, taking given phrases including "sex dolphin" and "Italian hero sandwich" and turning them into bedroom jams. His great voice, coupled with the absurd content, has the potential for a Ylvis-type hit, but unfortunately there were backing beats to go with the song. Until now.
  • RatDog and Bob Weir going on tour during 2014; Good news for Grateful Dead fans

The Grateful Dead may have formally disbanded in 1995, but the band's fans are still as passionate as ever. Fortunately, despite the fold, those fans have been able to get theirs via RatDog, the side project begun by Dead guitarist Bob Weir. Now, after a three-year hiatus, RatDog are hitting the road again, so Deadheads won't have to settle for some touring cover band anymore.
