Because cover songs don't garner nearly as much traction on the radio or the charts as they once did, artists these days treat them more like fun little experiments, where they can try out things they normally wouldn't on one of their albums or original singles. This has resulted in plenty of inventive and fascinating covers, especially this past year. Here are the year's 10 best cover songs (in no particular order). -
NBC Signs Brian Williams to New, Long-Term Deal to Continue Anchoring 'Nightly News'
Head honchos at NBC News are breathing a bit easier after officially signing NBC's "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams to a new, multi-year contract that is sure to keep him around the halls of 30 Rock for a long time to come. Williams first took over the anchor seat from the legendary Tom Brokaw in 2004 and has pretty much dominated the evening news race from Day 1. In recent months ABC's David Muir has begun to challenge him in the ratings race, but Williams seems to be taking the competition in stride.NBC News President Deborah Turness announced Williams's new deal in a memo, which read, "Brian is one of the most trusted journalists of our time. He has led this organization through every major news event for the last decade, from Hurricane Katrina in his first year in the anchor chair to his exclusive interview with Edward Snowden this year, through elections, wars, natural disasters, tragedies and triumphs. In all of those cases he's taken 'Nightly News's' viewers to the heart of the stories that matter most in a way that's uniquely his." -
Jimmy Fallon and Steve Carrell Cover Marvin Gaye's 'Sexual Healing' in Barbershop Quartet The Ragtime Gals [WATCH]
Jimmy Fallon has done it again. The 'Tonight Show' host and his Ragtime Gals, featuring the talents of Steve Carell, transformed Marvin Gaye's 1982 soul hit "Sexual Healing" into a Barbershop masterpiece. While the skit is extremely funny, like most of Fallon's singing bits, it also sounds killer. It doesn't even compare to those rainbow suit jackets, though. -
Best Viral Video Hits of 2014: From "Booty" to "#SELFIE" to "Word Crimes," YouTube Hits Made Mark on Hot 100
Ahh, the viral video. In an age where album and track sales are down and the music industry looks a little bleak, there is one saving grace: the music video that hits it big on YouTube. 2014 was no exception to this rule and some of the biggest hits of the year reached their status thanks to scandalous, funny or straight sexy music videos. -
Even Jay Leno Is a Fan of Jimmy Fallon's Revitalized 'Tonight Show'
In under a year Jimmy Fallon has transformed the art of late-night television. Gone are the days when people chose their show based on the guest-star lineup on any particular evening. Fallon is the entertainment and the reason that people are tuning in to "The Tonight Show" on a regular basis. The guest stars are kind of like icing on the cake. "Entertainment Weekly" got it right in naming Fallon the 2014 Entertainer of the Year, and as it turns out, even Jay Leno agrees. It was rumored at first that NBC was shoving Leno out to make room for Fallon, but there was never any animosity between these two. Instead, Leno took his exit with a shred of grace and now he gets the appeal of Fallon just like all the rest of us.Leno told "EW" in an interview:"I don't watch every night, but I watch and I enjoy — and I enjoy Seth [Meyers], too. Jimmy's a really great mimic. When I saw him do Neil Young, I just thought he was lip-syncing the song. But no — he really captures the nuances really well. It's different. Everybody has their strengths and weaknesses. I could never do a musical parody — it's just not what's in me. You know, I got out at the right time. When you're 40 and you're talking to the 25-year-old supermodel, it's sexy. When you're 64, you're the creepy old guy, you know? At some point, you can't pretend to know all of Jay-Z's music. You can only live in the time you live in." -

U2's The Edge on Bono's Cycling Injuries: 'He Basically Can’t Move for the Next Couple of Months'
Bono's injuries from a recent cycling accident were pretty bad. The U2 frontman had multiple surgeries after breaking some bones last month. That resulted in the band rescheduling their planned residency on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," and Bono had to sit out on the World AIDS Day performance earlier this week. The Edge spoke with Los Angeles radio station KROQ to update fans about the singer's condition."He managed to come out of it with what you can only describe as injuries from a car crash, literally multiple fractures of bones in his elbow and his back," he said. "But he's doing OK. We're kind of lucky he was wearing a helmet, so he didn't actually break Central Park. He's made of tough stuff and he's bouncing back."U2 was originally scheduled to play the radio station's Almost Acoustic Christmas concert, but they had to back out after Bono's accident. The singer is "so upset" about that, Edge noted."He's been told by his doctors to stay put. He's back in Dublin right now and he basically can't move for the next couple of months," he added. "The poor guy, basically his left elbow was shattered, so a lot of the work was reconstructing the joints and putting in wires and plates. He actually showed us some X-rays a couple days later, it looked like a miniature Eiffel Tower." -
Jimmy Fallon Has Been Named 'Entertainment Weekly' 2014 Entertainer of the Year
A few days after we all flip our calendars to December, it begins: the year-end best and worst of everything lists that pop up in nearly every major publication. It only makes sense that "Entertainment Weekly" would be leading the pack with its selections of the biggest hits and most epic fails of the year. Its selection for the 2014 Entertainer of the Year is Jimmy Fallon, and really, can anyone even begin to offer up a valid argument against "EW's" selection?Fallon took over "The Tonight Show's" hosting duties from Jay Leno just as the Sochi Olympics were wrapping up, and he kind of did the unthinkable. Fallon's ratings were really high for his first few nights at the helm of "The Tonight Show," and then they got better. Not even a year into his new gig and his ratings are better than Leno's were even in his much-hyped final weeks on NBC.So what is the secret to Fallon's groundbreaking success? -

Jimmy Fallon's 'Lip Sync Battle' to Get Spin-Off Show on Spike TV: Premiere Date Set for April
One of Jimmy Fallon's most popular "Late Night" and "Tonight Show" games, Lip Sync Battle, is getting its own TV show. Spike TV will be the network home for "Lip Sync Battle," slated for an April premiere. According to "Rolling Stone," actors Stephen Merchant and John Krasinski, both of whom have played the game with Fallon, created the concept with Emily Blunt. If you missed the lip-sync battles with Fallon, then let's recap. Krasinski competed against the host on Late Night, performing a hilarious rendition of Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." Fallon then invited Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Merchant for a bout as well. That epic battle saw Merchant taking on "Boom! Shake the Room" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and Gordon-Levitt mouthing "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John.Paul Rudd helped bring the game to "The Tonight Show," performing Tina Turner's "You Better Be Good to Me" and Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now." Emma Stone tore through Blues Traveler's "Hook" and DJ Khaled's "All I Do Is Win," and Fallon most recently took on The Voice judges Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani. Like most of Fallon's games, it is a pleasure to watch. -

The star-studded lineup of Usher, Nick Jonas and Jeff Daniels stopped by "The Tonight Show" last night, Nov. 10, to play the old TV game show classic "Pyramid" with Jimmy Fallon. Jonas does not know a single gangster film because, as Fallon says, "He's 15 years old" (3:20).3. Fallon picked some bad lines to reference "Goodfellas" (3:48).4. Jonas takes a canteen to work (6:12).5. Daniels does not know much about R&B/soul music, which is probably a good thing since he cannot dance (7:19).
