When it was revealed yesterday that Led Zeppelin was being sued by the band Spirit for stealing the famous intro to "Stairway to Heaven" from its song "Taurus," it came as no real surprise to anyone familiar with the history of Led Zeppelin, who has been accused of plagiarism many times before. Here are seven examples of songs that Led Zeppelin ripped off from other artists. -
Minimal Awkwardness: Philip Glass Versus Steve Reich at Brooklyn Academy of Music's Next Wave Festival 2014
The glass will be shattered regarding who's the better minimalist--Steve Reich vs. Phil Glass--in Brooklyn, New York during a three-day performance at BAM's upcoming Next Wave Festival 2014. Alcohol will be served, too. -
Spirit Finally Suing Led Zeppelin for Similarities between 'Taurus' and 'Stairway to Heaven'
It's been known for a long time that the classic opening to "Stairway to Heaven" sounds much like the slightly less classic opening to "Taurus" by Spirit, a band Zeppelin toured with during the late '60s. Now the band and family of deceased songwriter Randy California is suing Zeppelin for songwriting credits...and probably a chunk of cash that comes with its royalties. -
Jimmy Page wants a Led Zeppelin reunion, Robert Plant seemingly doesn't
Led Zeppelin is still at the top of list of "reunion concerts that people would kill to see" last we checked, but the usual tensions between frontman and guitarist suggest that fans shouldn't get their hopes up. Jimmy Page recently told The New York Times that he's "fed up" with vocalist Robert Plant's refusal to commit to such an effort. -
6 Title Tracks That Were Left Off the Album: Led Zeppelin, Tom Waits, and more
Many albums get their titles from a specific song in the tracklisting, but there are rare occasions when these particular songs are cut from the album, but the album title remains the same. Here are seven title tracks that were left off of their albums. -
6 Artists Who Have Reused Their Lyrics: The Smiths, Bruce Springsteen, and more
A lot of artists get accused of writing the same songs over and over again (AC/DC, the Ramones...), but some artists have literally taken parts of their songs and used them twice. Here are six artists who have recycled their own lyrics. -
7 Artists Who Released Multiple Classic Albums in One Year: Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, and more
It’s rare enough for an artist to release just one classic album over the span of their entire career, but somehow, these seven artists managed to release multiple classic albums over the span of a single year. -
7 Classic Albums That Would Improve with Different Production: Paul Simon, Oasis and more
Though I wrote a list a few weeks ago about classic albums that sound awful, I wouldn’t change a thing about the way any of those albums were produced. When I sit down and listen to Raw Power, I want it to be rough and fuzzy, because that’s the kind of music the Stooges made. These seven albums, however, would have greatly benefited from a production overhaul. -
6 Bands Who's Final Album Was Its Worst: The Clash, Led Zeppelin and more
When R.E.M. released its critically panned 2004 album Around the Sun, the band considered breaking up, but realized that they couldn’t end their career on such a failure, which prompted them to release two acclaimed albums before calling it a day in 2012. That was R.E.M., though. Not every band is able to control its legacy so gracefully. Here are six bands that broke up after their weakest albums. -
6 Artists Whose Second Band Was Superior: Jimmy Page, Ian MacKaye, and more
When a musician is kicked out of a high-profile band, or if that band breaks up, they can usually be expected to start another band soon afterwards. While these bands are rarely better than the old ones (see: Wings, Big Audio Dynamite), sometimes the new band is actually better. Here are six artists whose second band was better than their first. -
Eight Totally Bizarre Guitar Solos: Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, and more
The most renowned guitar solos in rock history are soaring and highly melodic, like David Gilmour’s ethereal passages in “Comfortably Numb,” or the epic guitar duel between Don Felder and Joe Walsh at the end of “Hotel California”. These eight solos listed here are way too strange to ever get such recognition, but they’re definitely worth checking out anyway. -
8 Pairs of Songs with the Same Title: Which is Better?
While musicians can be sued if they plagiarize lyrics or melodies, song titles are pretty much fair game, resulting in a ton of songs with the same name. I’ve decided to stack up some of the best songs that share titles and see which is better. These might seem like arbitrary comparisons based on a coincidence, but so are “Best of the Year” lists, and those are cool.
