  • Christian Bale Listened to Pantera & Mastodon for 2 Weeks to Learn Drums for 'The Big Short'

Christian Bale proves once again that he is one of the best method actors of our time; claiming that he learned to play drums by listening to the heavy metal band Pantera's "By Demons Be Driven" for two weeks to prepare for his role as 'The Big Short's' Mike Bury. In the movie, and apparently in real life, Bury unwinds at the end of his days as a hedge fund manager (one of the first to invest in the subprime mortgage crisis), by listening and playing double kick drum along to metal bands such as Pantera and Mastodon.

  • Fox Affiliate Anchor Kristi Capel Suspended for Using Racial Slur to Describe Lady Gaga's Performances

The fallout continues for Cleveland's 'Fox 8 in the Morning' anchor Kristi Capel, who on Monday, Feb. 23, made the potentially career-ending mistake of using a racial slur on air. While doing an Oscar recap with co-anchor Wayne Dawson for the Fox affiliate, Capel praised Lady Gaga's performance by saying she usually cannot hear her voice because of the "jigaboo music" she uses. In case Capel did not offend people the first time, she then used the word a second time to really drive home her point, and boy, did viewers get it. In spite of issuing an apology, the reaction has been so bad Capel has been suspended from the air.

Though there were plenty of songs that were widely assumed to be shoo-ins, such as Lana Del Rey's "Big Eyes" and Lorde's "Yellow Flicker Beat," they were passed over for some pretty left-field choices (most surprisingly, only one of the songs on this list was also nominated for a Golden Globe). Here are the five Academy Award nominees for Best Original Song ranked, from worst to best.
  • Oscar Best Original Song Shortlist: Coldplay, Lorde, Lana Del Rey Included

The Golden Globes listed five nominations for Best Original Song earlier this week, and the Academy Awards have now followed suit with a "short list" of 79 songs up for the same title. The Globe will be decided on the night of Jan. 11, but the Oscars don't take place until Feb. 22, so there's still a full month before that lengthy selection of songs gets pared down to five.
  • Trent Reznor Likes Oscar Nominations Way Better Than Winning a Grammy

Trent Reznor's film composition career has been a huge success so far, and he enjoys the praise from the movie industry more than the awards he has collected as a member of Nine Inch Nails. He would rather win an Oscar than a Grammy."Having won a couple Grammys for stupid s--t — best metal performance — it's hard to feel good about the integrity of that," Reznor told "The Hollywood Reporter" recently. "If that's how much you're paying attention to what you're giving out, why should I think that really means anything?"Reznor has never been a fan of the awards show, but that relationship worsened in January when his show-closing performance at the Grammys — with Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters, Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac — was cut short for a commercial.
