With the release of Damon Albarn's first solo LP Everyday Robots, I've started thinking about other artists who have been in the music game for a long time, but have never chosen to go solo. Here are six artists that I would love to hear solo albums from. -
5 Albums That Nearly Broke Up the Band
Bands can break up for a wide variety of reasons, but these five bands nearly came to an end over the creation of a specific album in their catalogues. Here are five albums that nearly broke up the band. -
7 Classic Albums That Would Improve with Different Production: Paul Simon, Oasis and more
Though I wrote a list a few weeks ago about classic albums that sound awful, I wouldn’t change a thing about the way any of those albums were produced. When I sit down and listen to Raw Power, I want it to be rough and fuzzy, because that’s the kind of music the Stooges made. These seven albums, however, would have greatly benefited from a production overhaul. -
Seven Albums Hated by the People Who Made Them: R.E.M., the Beatles, and more
Musicians have a very unusual relationship with the songs they write. Just like an actor doesn't sit around watching his or her own movies all day (hopefully), a musician doesn't listen to their own albums very often, for various reasons. They could simply be tired of hearing the songs, or maybe they're self-conscious, but sometimes an artist genuinely dislikes their own work. Here are seven albums aren't very well liked by the people who made them. -
Eight Songs That Are Genuinely Terrifying (But Still Incredible): The Cure, R.E.M., and more
There’s plenty of dark and depressing music out there (and I listen to a bunch of it), but finding a song that’s dark and terrifying is very rare. Death metal bands may attempt to be scary, but their music ends up being more cartoonishly fun than genuinely frightening. Here are eight great songs that are genuinely frightening. -
Joseph Arthur and R.E.M. members cover Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side' on Letterman [WATCH]
Yesterday, R.E.M.'s Mike Mills announced David Letterman's retirement from the Late Show via Twitter. He happened to be performing the show that day when Letterman told the audience of his decision. He and bandmate Peter Buck along with singer-songwriter Joseph Arthur hit the stage to pay tribute to the late Lou Reed with a poignant cover of his classic "Walk on the Wild Side." -
8 Great Country Songs by Non-Country Artists: The White Stripes, The Beatles, Tom Waits and more
There are some music genres, such as hip-hop, whose songs should only be handled by artists working within that genre (nobody really wants to hear Neil Young rap, do they?). But with genres such as country, having outsiders try their hand at the sound isn't such a bad idea. Here are eight great country songs that weren't performed by country artists. -
R.E.M. to release audio from both MTV Unplugged performances on Record Store Day
R.E.M. has announced that they will release audio from their two MTV Unplugged performances for the first time ever on Record Store Day. The band, who split up in 2011 after 30 years together, are the only group to have been invited for two appearances on the show, the first in 1991 and the second in 2001. -
R.E.M. Looks To Release Fan Club Christmas Singles as Box Set For Chairty
Members of the R.E.M. fan club got a yearly gift from the band around Christmas-time. For $10 a year, members got access to the perks of being in the club, but the most exciting part was the CD sent out every December, containing two unreleased tracks from the band.
