CMJ 2014 begins tomorrow, Oct. 21, in dozens of venues across New York City, and with more than 1,300 artists performing, it can be pretty tough to decide which ones are worth your time and money. Concert Review: Cat Circus in Bloomfield, NJ, 5/2/14
Like a great number of "venues" in New Jersey, the Cat Circus is just the basement of a house rented out by college students, but it's definitely the cleanest, most organized college house I've ever set foot in. The original bill for this show/birthday party/vegan BBQ consisted of eight acts, which is three or four more than is usually recommended for a house show, but two of the acts ended up not playing, which I'm sure the neighbors were quite thankful for. -
6 Bands That Began as Solo Projects: Grizzly Bear, Foo Fighters, and more
Unless they're singing folk songs like Bob Dylan, solo artists are rarely "solo" in the most literal sense of the word, typically employing a backing band to play along with them on record and during concerts. However, just as some artists leave their bands in pursuit of a solo career, some solo artists feel more comfortable playing music within a band environment. Here are six great bands that began as solo projects for one of the members. -
A Basement Show in Haledon, New Jersey: Where is My Spaceship, Glazer, Kal Marks, and Party Cops
My friend Jeff's house in Haledon is absolutely filthy, and has been ever since I started hanging out there in 2011, but tonight there seemed to have been a few efforts made to clean up the place. For starters, there weren't any broken beer bottles anywhere, and the old laptop that was Office Space-d into a million pieces at the last show had been (mostly) swept up. Of course, Jeff still didn't have any mic stands or power strips for the bands to use, but at least you could safely walk around the space.
