    Billy Joel made history at one of the most acclaimed music venues in the world this week when he played his 65th concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The total helped him to surpass that of friend Elton John, giving him the most appearances at the historic Manhattan venue. There are many music venues the world over that are adored by performers and fans alike, but unfortunately not many have done much work in attempting to figure out what performers have played there the most. Of course, many—such as The Troubadour in Los Angeles—probably didn't foresee themselves lasting as long as they have. Music Times has done our best to figure out what musicians have played the most gigs at some of the world's most vaunted performance spaces.
  • Grateful Dead Members, Eric Church, Widespread Panic to Perform at Jerry Garcia Tribute Show in May

    Surviving members of the Grateful Dead will kick off the summer with a tribute concert for their deceased bandmate Jerry Garcia. Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Micket Hart will join an all-star lineup of talent. Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia will feature Eric Church, Widespread Panic and O.A.R., among others, on May 14 at the Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland.

    With the Snowmageddon 2015 all bluster and hype (unless you live in Boston), summer feels like it's practically around the corner. If you haven't spent all of your festival money so far, another outdoor massive is looking for your time and cash this summer. Louisville, Kentucky based festival, Forecastle, has released the first wave of artists who will be performing this summer. Louisville's own My Morning Jacket, in addition to Modest Mouse, Sam Smith and Widespread Panic, will headline the Kentucky festival.

    Some of music's finest acts, including R.E.M., Neutral Milk Hotel, Drive-By Truckers and Widespread Panic, are rallying to save the legendary church steeple in Athens, Georgia, that stands as tribute to the community's bustling music scene.As The A.V. Club points out, the steeple used to be part of an entire church where Michael Stipe, Peter Buck, Mike Mills and Bill Berry performed their first gig in 1980 as R.E.M. The church was brought down in 1990, "Rolling Stone" notes, and the steeple has been threatened to be demolished in recent years. Nuçi's Space, a health and music resource center that works for the prevention of suicide, has partnered with musicians from the area to help save the landmark.

    Paleontologists struck the jackpot this month when they descended into Natural Trap Cave, a geological feature near the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming. The chasm houses the fossilized remains of literally thousands of prehistoric mammals. Included among the find are ancient camels, bears and yes, mammoths.     The 28-track album, Rivers Rising: Front Range Flood Relief 2013, will benefit the damage caused by the floods via United Way Foothills. Available for purchase on Livedownloads.com, the complication features many jam bands known for their ties to the area including Further, The String Cheese Incident, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, Widespread Panic, Umphrey's McGee, Slightly Stoopid, Railroad Earth and many more. All of the tracks are recorded from live performances.
