Initially, Reneé Rapp has been publicly known to identify herself as bisexual. Everything changed when she appeared in an episode of Saturday Night Live where she revealed on national TV that she's a lesbian.
More recently, the singer reflected on her decision to come out at the last minute.
The Mean Girls the Musical actress recently appeared in an interview with Them, where she opened up about coming to terms with her sexuality.
"I'm sure for some people it doesn't feel right... I don't know all the nuances to the conversation. However, for me, it was really beneficial," she explained.
She further noted that accepting her sexuality had something to do with queer people around her, saying she had a diverse group of friends who were either trans, nonbinary, or lesbian, and she felt happy around them.
"I was like, 'I feel so happy when I'm with you guys. And I also really want to call myself a lesbian when I'm around you,'" she said.
Rapp then noted that when she was bisexual, she wanted to prove herself to the public, but she later realized that she was "just gay like that.

When it was time for her to appear on an SNL skit, comedian Bowen Yang was supposed to introduce her as "our little bisexual intern Reneé," but she asked one of the writers to change it to "gay."
However, there was a thought in her mind that she didn't want to do it and make bisexual people feel bad, and if she used the word "gay," she also didn't want to offend lesbians.
To help her with her decision, Rapp called a friend who told her that it would be "f****** sick" if she came out as lesbian on the TV program.
The episode finally aired, and Yang introduced her as "our little lesbian intern."
The musician was scared at first, so she turned off her phone for days, but she later felt good about her decision.
In other updates about Rapp, the singer is set to headline the 2024 All Things Go Music Festival at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, on September 28, 2024.
Aside from the singer, other headliners include Hozier, Bleachers, and Laufey with the Kennedy Center Orchestra.
