There's no way around it; YG has a sketchy past.
And while that sometimes serves rappers well when they need to create content, it can also backfire.
Speaking with VIBE this week, the 24-year-old Compton rapper elaborated on his gang history and the time he flashed his first gun at an enemy crew (via HipHopDX).
"You get jumped on by a certain amount of people for a certain amount of time," he said. "I gave my life up for this gangbang s--t. The moment you get put on you gotta bang the hood and be involved in gang activities. I'm not trying to say I sold my soul, but I dedicated my life to the set. You could end up dead or in jail for the rest of your life, you feel me?
"My best friend gave me my first gun. When I held it, I was like, 'Ooh wee! This is real!'... I threw a party in a church hall, but n----s who we had problems with came. They walked up close and I pulled the hammer out on them like, 'N----, what's happening?!' Up in the church! They backed back, like, 'OK, fa'sho.'"
The Drake Vs. Lil Wayne Tour was supposed to feature YG for a run of six September dates, but the "My Hitta" rapper announced Friday afternoon that he would be missing the next two in Irvine (Sept. 19) and Hollywood (Sept. 22).
The culprit? Los Angeles' police department, at least according to YG:
"Irving/Hollywood," he tweeted. "The LAPD ain't letting me perform at the #DrakeVsWayne dates today and Monday. All that giving bak must don't matter."
Meanwhile, YG is up for five BET Hip Hop Awards in Atlanta this weekend:
- Best Collabo, Duo or Group ("My Hitta")
- Track of the Year ("My Hitta")
- Rookie of the Year
- Best Club Banger ("My Hitta")
- People's Champ Award ("My Hitta (Remix)")
