Jesse Matthew, the man who has been charged with the abduction of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham, is also being closely scrutinized to see if he is connected to any other open cases in the state. Virginia State Police seem to have a bunch of puzzle pieces in front of them from various cases — some of which are sexual assaults — and they seem to all be interconnecting with Matthew.
Police confirmed that they have found "a new forensic link" between the 2009 murder of Morgan Harrington and Matthew. Another woman, Cassandra Morton, 23, was reported missing in Lynchburg, Virginia, on the same night that Harrington, 20, vanished in Charlottesville, Virginia, in October 2009.
The women went missing about 60 miles apart and Morton's remains were found on Candlers Mountain in November of that year. Harrington's remains weren't found until the following January. In 2010, state police said they found a DNA link between Harrington's murder and a sexual assault that took place back in 2005 in Fairfax, Virginia. That woman survived her attack.
Yesterday, Christopher Newport University went public with the information that Matthew was accused of sexual assault while he was a student there back in 2003.
When asked about their reasons for offering up such information, the school said, "The success of the criminal investigation is paramount at this time. The university has consulted with the Virginia State Police again today, and we are now releasing the following non-exempt 'criminal incident information.'"
As of now, Graham's whereabouts remain a mystery and Matthew has refused to talk to police since being extradited from Texas back to Virginia.
Do you think Virginia State Police will end up with enough evidence through DNA to finally solve several of these open cases, as well as eventually learn the whereabouts of Graham? Comment below.
