DaBaby was supposed to be one of the biggest rappers at the start of the 2020s decade. However, his career was eclipsed by a huge controversy that has seen him plummeting down and getting beaten up by people online.
One thing about the internet was that they never forget. In 2021, DaBaby unleashed a slew of homophobic remarks that attracted a huge backlash on his name, with Dua Lipa, one of his biggest collaborators, discrediting him.
However, in a new interview, DaBaby reflects on his past mistakes and reveals what he would have done given the chance to deal with everything again.
DaBaby Homophobic Remarks Explained
In a Rolling Loud Miami performance in 2021, DaBaby shocked many with his off-beat, sexist, and homophobic remarks.
"If you didn't show up today with HIV, AIDS, or any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases, that'll make you die in two to three weeks, then put your cellphone lighter up," he said."Ladies, if your pussy smell like water, put your cellphone light in the air. Fellas, if you ain't sucking dick in the parking lot, put your cellphone lighter up."
Dua Lipa, his collaborator on "Levitating," was "horrified" by his statements and retracted her support for him. She later on asked for the removal of the remix version on radio and Apple Music playlists.
DaBaby tried to do damage control and even supported his stance initially. However, as more backlash continue to pour in, he switched gears and became more apologetic.
"As a man who has had to make his own way from very difficult circumstances, having people I know publicly working against me - knowing that what I needed was education on these topics and guidance - has been challenging," he said in a statement back then.
People like Madonna, Elton John, and Questlove, among many others, have expressed their condemnation of DaBaby's statements.
DaBaby Reflects on Homophobic Remarks
Two years after his controversial statements, the "Rockstar" rapper revealed to "UNINTERRUPTED series The Shop," that if he would be given the chance, he's "absolutely" deal with the matter differently.
"That's something that came out my own mouth and said, you know what I mean? Like as of late, not even as of late, like I would have apologized, like, I'm this type of person," he reflected. Like, I'm going to fight tooth and nail about my character and my intentions. I'm not a bad person. I'm unfaltering on that."
