Taylor Swift Tackles Etsy, Sending Cease-and-Desists to Producers of Non-Licensed Merchandise; Is Your Favorite Band Next?
Taylor Swift takes intellectual property seriously, hence why she copyrighted the phrase "this sick beat," much to the surprise of many musicians and fans. Most assumed the action was to prevent other performers from referencing it in lyrics, such as how Jay Z's "99 Problems" is frequently cited. It seems that the pop star and her legal team has targeted small-time merchandisers on the site Etsy however. -
Copyright Law May Allow Taylor Swift, Prince et al to Pull Covers from Spotify and Streaming Services As Well
Taylor Swift made headlines during the end of 2014 by pulling her catalogue from Spotify, preventing listeners from checking out her sick beats without shelling out for the song or album 1989. She's not the only one who's keeping their wares off of the streaming service and others like it...The Beatles and Apple Records have yet to release the band's discography to the service. Yet many fans know a loophole, if they're willing to ignore subtle differences in quality: There are covers of the songs on Spotify, performed by bands aiming to sound exactly like The Beatles. Perhaps not for long however, as the U.S. Copyright Office is looking to allow performers to prevent covers of their work from being streamed as well. -

Taylor Swift Tops Album Sales Charts as Ne-Yo, Charlie Wilson and the Bethel Music Group Debut in Top 10
This week's Billboard 200 didn't reflect much in terms of new music but the Albums Chart has better news, introducing two new debut discs. Taylor Swift and 1989 are at the top again however, selling 71,000 copies. As we mentioned yesterday, that makes her only the second female performer to top the chart for at least 10 weeks with two different albums (the other being Whitney Houston). Also interesting: This week's stop at the top marks the first time since Lecrae's Anomaly during September that an album went to no. 1 with less than 100,000 in sales. -

7 Hit Albums We Waited More Than 10 Years For (David Bowie, Sade and D'Angelo Have Nothing on Harper Lee)
The world was pleasantly surprised to find out yesterday that Harper Lee, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of To Kill A Mockingbird, would finally be publishing her second book during 2015 after years of hiding from the spotlight. The new title, Go Set A Watchman, was actually written before Mockingbird yet is set 20 years following the events of her published book. It should be noted that Lee is not in the best of health, and some allege that publisher HarperCollins may have swooped in following the death of her sister and lawyer Alice Lee and taken advantage of the situation. We hope for the best, like what happened with the seven albums listed below, which were critical smashes when performers such as David Bowie, D'Angelo and Sade released them after decade-long spans. -

Taylor Swift Sets Records with '1989' on Billboard 200, While Maroon 5, Ne-Yo and Grammy Nominees Resurge
One week after a surge of new releases and the Billboard 200 has gotten back to the same ol' as Taylor Swift and 1989 reclaim the top spot on the charts. The album moved 101,000 equivalent albums as it earned its tenth week atop the Billboard 200 and the first time in three weeks. This makes Swift openly the second woman ever to have two separate albums that have spent at least 10 weeks at no. 1, with Whitney Houston being the other. -

Hilarious Video Uses Faulty Logic to Justify Migos Better Than The Beatles. Watch and Be Illuminated.
Several acts, including Elvis Presley and The Rolling Stones, have been the subjects of misguided attempts to prove that an act exists that was of greater musical influence during the 20th Century than The Beatles. Maybe if you have a high-minded listener you can make the argument for Miles Davis. One act that probably didn't come to mind, unless you're Complex: Migos. The publication has come up with a short video giving ten reasons why the Atlanta hip-hop trio is a better act than the skiffle superstars. -
