The Best Selling Hip-Hop Albums of All Time: Eminem, Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G...Who's No. 1?
Thirty years ago on this day Run-D.M.C. were rewarded for its high sales, as its self-titled first album became the first hip-hop album in history to earn "Gold" status-which indicates more than 100,000 copies sold-nine months after its release. Hip-hop has come a long way in terms of styles and popularity in those 30 years, so the group's first album is far from the highest sellers in the genre anymore. -

Things are looking up for relations between the United States and Cuba: Alan Gross, an American citizen who was imprisoned on the island for five years, returned home this morning. That was followed by a phone discussion between President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro, which marked the first official talks between leadership of the two countries since 1959. Big things could be on the horizon in terms of "normalizing" the diplomatic ties between the two nations. Music Times has prepared a brief look at some of Cuba's brightest modern stars so you can get comfortable with the country's bustling music scene before your (hopefully soon) trip to Havana. -

Last week Music Times confirmed that AC/DC would be playing its first dates in the UK since 2009, including a headlining spot at the prestigious Wembley Stadium, perhaps the biggest gig available in England. Recent changes to the band's lineup haven't disrupted its popularity in the region apparently. The band's Wembley concert sold out all of its nearly 73,000 tickets in less than an hour -
Spotify Done with Topspin for Musician Merch, Don't Expect It to Pop Up at Beats Music Either
Roughly eleven months ago your correspondent was excitedly working on a short article detailing Spotify's announcement that it would be teaming up with Topspin to allow performers to peddle their merchandise on the streaming service via their official band pages. It was at least a mild relief knowing that musicians could make money some other way via Spotify since the royalty payments-per-stream are on the low side. Eleven months later, your correspondent is back to let you know that Spotify is done with Topspin. -

They May Not Have Made $72 Million, But They Were at No. 1 Before High School: Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and More
Today's hot story: A student at the esteemed Stuyvesant High School has reportedly made more than $72 million while playing the stock market during his lunch break. The Queens resident, who is being referred to as the "Teen Wolf (of Wall Street)" is also rumored to have already bought a BMW with the payouts, although he doesn't have a license to drive it. It's tough to compare big time investors such as this prodigy will probably become with musicians, because investors just make more money. Period. We can compare this young man to those in the music industry who got their starts at an incredibly young age. -
The Beatles Christmas Records: Ranking The Yearly Mess from John, Paul, George and Ringo 1963-1969
Pearl Jam wasn't the first band to send out yearly Christmas exclusives to its fan club. The Beatles had jumped on that train nearly 30 years earlier. The difference of course is that Pearl Jam's fans could expect some new musical recordings, covers if nothing else, while the biggest band in history took the yearly task of crafting a Christmas album about as seriously as Stephen Colbert takes investigative reporting. The results tended to be a mess...occasionally a curious mess, but a mess nonetheless. Music Times has waded through the seven Beatles Christmas flexi-discs and made a modest attempt at ranking them. -

Here's the Top 10 for those who don't want to waste time counting down from 100. -
'American Idol' Will Ditch Results Night Episode, Downgrade to One Weekly Episode during 2015 According to Ryan Seacrest
American Idol fans thought they would be dealing with a "huge" change in programming when it was announced earlier this year that longtime staff member Randy Jackson wouldn't be returning as a mentor, marking the first time he hans't appeared on the program. However Ryan Seacrest subtly dropped the real bombshell while being interviewed at the Z100 Jingle Ball on Friday night in New York: The show would be ditching its second "Results Night" program so that performers and viewers alike won't have to wait for another day to find out the winners (or more importantly, the losers). -
Spotify Demonstrates via Slipknot That Band-Sponsored "Takeovers" Result in Huge Listening Bumps (as Do New Albums)
Spotify has cleverly disguised its most recent self-promotion as an entry on its Insights blog, which track listening trends among members. The last entry notes how well Slipknot did as a result of its Halloween "takeover," or the band's curation of the popular "Rock Right Now" playlist. The metal band saw a distinct spike in listeners as a result...also-known-as Spotify wants you as a major label act to know that you'll reach so many new people if you host a takeover on their site (and garner them some attention in the meantime). The stats are hard to deny however. -
DIIV-isive Issues: Bassist Makes Racist/Homophobic/Misogynistic Comments on 4Chan, Band Debates Whether He'll Be Cut
Chalk in another victory for the demons of idiocy: DIIV is currently undergoing some issues related to many stupid—aka racist, homophobic and misogynist—statements made on social media by bassist Devin Ruben Perez. Although the musician has claimed that he was merely being stupid, versus being an actual racist/homophobe/misogynist, the New York-based alt band is reportedly weighing its options on whether or not to keep Perez within its lineup. -

"You've Lost That Loving Feeling": 50 Years of The Righteous Brothers Classic and Five Covers, from Elvis to Hall & Oates
Fifty years ago on this date, The Righteous Brothers made one of its most important contributions to music culture (outside of the amazing band name "The Righteous Brothers"): The duo released its hit track "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'." As with any classic pop track released during the '60s, a number of huge names took their turns at covering the original hit. We'll leave it up to you whether any of those covers live up to the original...all we know is that none of the performers involved in the covers had better names then the men who originated the track. -
