  • Beats Music reveals deal with Merlin, will give independent labels same royalty rate as majors

Beats Music is coming at the world aggressively, as it has done with every other Beats product. Not only have the sales of Beats headphones and "pill" speaker boxes increased thanks to the company's commercials, but the music used within the commercials has seen huge jumps in downloads as well. Advertising professionals might refer to these results as Beats "knowing what they're doing." It stands to reason that the company is being smart with the contract it just hashed out with British licensing group Merlin.
  • Tiësto, Calvin Harris and Steve Aoki Slated to Play MGM Grand's Wet Republic opening month

We've frequently commented on the Hakkasan nightclub's most stacked of residential lineups for 2014, and how it's the envy of electronic dance venues in Las Vegas, and in doing so, we may have failed to give attention to the other clubs held within the MGM Grand complex. The casino resort's Wet Republic is set to reopen during late March after some remodeling during the off-season, and it plans to open the venue with a slew of big name DJ's.
  • Owen Pallett announces new album 'In Conflict' and short tour

If you haven't heard of Owen Pallett, you should add him to the list of musicians who are kind-of-like a big deal. The Canadian multi-instrumentalist, who formerly toured under the alias of Final Fantasy, must be doing something right, because every project he gets involved with is artistic gold, and we have little doubt his newly announced album will result in a similar outcome.
  • Nas releasing 'Illmatic XX' to celebrate 20th anniversary of classic album

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of Nas' debut album Illmatic and the hip-hop world is understandably excited about it. Many a record has been proposed as the best in the genre's history, but Illmatic is one of the few that never falls out of the discussion. The emcee announced this week that he'll mark the occasion on April 15 with the special edition release Illmatic XX, a deluxe version of the original album.
  • AT&T patent would allow internet company to punish users for pushing bandwidth usage

AT&T has recently published a patent that would allow it to charge its customers based on how they use the internet. Patent US 20140010082 A1 proposes a process by which the company could charge its internet customers based on how much bandwidth they use. For example, those who stream music-and especially those who stream video via websites such as Netflix-would be required to pay more for their service.
  • NME lists its 500 best songs of all time: Nirvana, The Smiths and The Strokes vie for top spot

"Greatest songs of all time" lists are nothing new, but we admit we're curious to see what the folks at NME have come up with. After all, the magazine emphasizes rock from the U.K., and the U.K. has produced many of the most influential groups of all time. Interestingly, NME opted to shy away from the obvious big names, at least in its top five (only 500-401 and the top five have been released thus far).
  • Nick Jonas working on Demi Lovato's upcoming tour

The representatives of Disney's golden age of pop music have moved on from the company, but they're still making it work. One group that was once at the top of the Disney music empire, The Jonas Brothers, have officially folded. But the trio has far from given up on music. Nick Jonas, the youngest member of the group, has signed on with fellow Disney alum Demi Lovato as the musical and creative director on her "Neon Lights" tour.
  • Shania Twain staying in Las Vegas for residency, no tour or new album yet

Bad news or good news for country music fans, depending on what part of the country they live in. We reported during January that Shania Twain could potentially be gearing up for a tour, as she was headed to play her first Canadian show in years at the Calgary Stampede in Alberta. The performer just revealed however that she'll actually be heading back to Las Vegas to add another leg to her "Still The One" residency at Caesar's Palace.
  • Third Man Records and Revenant facing legal action over 'Paramount Records' collection

The Rise & Fall of Paramount Records, Volume 1 (1917-27), Perhaps the highlight of all music collections released during 2013, may be in trouble as its second volume is planned. A New Orleans jazz organization has claimed however that it owns the rights to the music featured in the set, which was released during November by Jack White's Third Man Records and Revenant Records.
  • Lil Wayne and figurative language: Teacher suspended for using '6 Foot 7 Foot' lyrics, Music Times completes her lesson

Lil Wayne, despite being totally unintelligible when speaking, is one of the most clever vocalists in the rap game when provided with a beat. Kids could learn a thing or two about literary devices by listening to some of the emcee's raps, or at least that's what one eighth-grade teacher in Florida figured when she gave her students copies of Wayne's "6 Foot 7 Foot" and asked them to underline examples of figurative language. The problem is that Wayne has one of the filthiest mouths in music. The teacher was reportedly suspended for three days by the school district.
  • Whitehouse.gov visitors give Justin Bieber deportation petition 243,000 votes, 350 votes for boosting research funds for Angelman Syndrome.

There seems to be a significant amount of Americans that think it fit to send Justin Bieber back to Canada in the wake his drunken drag-racing and neighbor's house-egging. A petition emerged on whitehouse.gov on January 23 calling for the removal of the pop star's green card and banishment from living in the United States. The petition requires 100,000 "signatures" before the White House will take it seriously, a goal the document has healthily surpassed, now having nearly 243,000 signatures as of publishing.
  • Google and YouTube get nasty looks from music industry at Midem

The uncomfortable relationship between Google and the music industry was full on display at the annual Midem industry trade show in Cannes, France. Representatives for Google, specifically its video-sharing holding YouTube, defended its role, but the overall attitude toward the company was negative.
  • Chief Keef and Kanye West photographed together, possibly collaborating on 'Bang 3'

Somehow Chicago has become one of the hottest locales in hip-hop at the moment. The curiosity is that the rappers popularizing the city's hip-hop scene are all coming from radically different directions...for example: Kanye West, Chance The Rapper and Chief Keef. A photo posted on Instagram Monday morning indicates that West and Keef may be collaborating however.
  • Red Hot Chili Peppers announce new album before Super Bowl show

The Super Bowl has increasingly become a musical event, from VH1's weeklong concert series throughout New York City, to the big band that is the game's halftime show. Saturday night, appropriately, featured the biggest live sets, as the Foo Fighters and Zac Brown Band played Midtown Manhattan and the Red Hot Chili Peppers prepped for their big game appearance by headlining the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
  • A$AP Mob and Rick Ross confirm March 4 release dates for 'L.O.R.D.' and 'Mastermind'

Hip-hop fans can look forward to March 4, as at least two big hip-hop releases will be dropping on that date. Rap collective the A$AP Mob has confirmed that its anticipated EP L.O.R.D. will debut during the first week of March, and Rick Ross seems to have settled on the date for the release of his Mastermind as well. Hip-hop tends to outdo all other genres when it comes to shuffling release dates, so don't be surprised if plans change during the next month however. Both of these projects have already seen "official" drop dates come and go.
  • Pandora Radio and Magic Piano top music apps for revenue during 2013

"There's an app for that" went out of style as a catchphrase a while ago, but it's gotten more and more true over the years. Music has been one of the industries most profoundly affected by the rise of phone and tablet tools. App Annie, a company that tracks data regarding the booming industry, released its report for 2013, and indicated that revenues generated by music-based apps went up 77 percent from 2012.
  • Garth Brooks sells out three Dublin Croker Park shows in less than 90 minutes

Ireland, admittedly, doesn't seem like the ideal place for an American country artist to begin his epic comeback. Garth Brooks, however, is a man that knows what he's doing. The country star announced that he would be performing three shows at Croke Park in Dublin on July 25, 26 and 27. His reasoning seems to have been solid, as both shows sold out within 90 minutes when tickets went on sale Friday morning.
  • Metallica's James Hetfield confirms Orion Fest will not happen again

If you planned on heading out to Metallica's next incarnation of the Orion Fest, we've got some bad news: Although the band suggested that it would continue the festival during 2015 after taking 2014 off, vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield said in an interview Thursday that the festival wouldn't be happening again.
