  • Demos from Dain Bramage, Dave Grohl's Pre-Nirvana band, discovered

Dave Grohl has been involved with plenty of bands, but people will always bring it back to Nirvana. Even as Grohl enters his 20th year as the leader of the Foo Fighters, his reputation is still based more on his four-year tenure with Nirvana (fans of the latter band know he wasn't even with the band on its debut, Bleach). And of course, Grohl was involved with other groups before he came to Nirvana. One of those bands was Dain Bramage, and eight of its tracks from 1986 were recently dug up.
  • Berry Gordy, Aretha Franklin, Ice Cube are among BET honorees

Entertainment representing African-American culture is full of figures that had a substantial impact on the American identity. We don't envy those at BET who have to pick who gets honored at the network's annual show, the BET Honors. This year's organizers seem to have picked a pretty solid group however.
  • Record Store Day will officially make April 19 both Holy and Good Saturday

Christians are familiar with the ascribed names for the days leading up to Easter Sunday: Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday. Saturday's always been an afterthought however, as nothing particularly relevant to the religion happened. If you happen to be a Christian who digs vinyl records, you may refer to April 19 as both Good and Holy Saturday, as it's been officially confirmed as Record Store Day 2014.
  • Shania Twain to play Calgary Stampede; is a full tour next?

There seems to be something a-brewing in the camp of a huge '90s country star, and for once we aren't talking about Garth Brooks. Music Times has spotted indications that Shania Twain might be going on tour, or at least playing true concerts, for the first time in more than a decade.
  • Guns 'n' Roses, Avenged Sevenfold, Kid Rock headlining Columbus's Rock on The Range

Music festival announcement season has swung into full gear, and after looking at a couple of lineups, you get the idea for the rest. Many kudos to the many worthy alternative and indie rock bands touring the festival circuit this summer, but few festivals include anything representing the harder-rocking/metal side of music (we're stoked for Deafheaven at Governor's Ball). Rock on The Range, based in Columbus, OH, is the place to be for those into "weight room rock." The show's eighth incarnation brings headliners again.
  • Lively aims to make any concert you just saw available for download

Live albums are a hit-or-miss endeavor. For every 23-minute version of "Whipping Post," there's going to be five other acts that play all the hits you'd hear on the actual album, except with the annoyance of screaming fans blotting the sound of the guitars out. We have to admit, having attended many an excellent concert, that having the chance to own a recorded version of the very gig you just attended is an appealing prospect. It's not a new concept: Bands such as The Grateful Dead and Pearl Jam always encouraged their fans to self-record and trade bootlegs of live shows. One company is looking to make a profit out of offering downloads of the show you just saw. Nearly any show.
  • Paul Oakenfold And Danny Howard: Eras Apart, Ambitions Alike

Paul Oakenfold is a world-renowned DJ, who's been ranked top in the world during his 30-plus year career. Danny Howard has rapidly found his footing in the scene after winning a competition on BBC Radio 1. Despite obvious differences in career status, both are hungry to stay current and stay relevant.
  • Katy Perry announces 'Prismatic' tour with Kacey Musgraves, Tegan and Sara, and Capital Cities

Katy Perry is seeing her popularity rise with the beginning of 2014, as her single "Dark Horse" rose to the top of the Digital Downloads charts last week and her album PRISM has risen on the Billboard 200 accordingly. The pop star is taking advantage of the situation and launching the "Prismatic" tour to build off that success. Dates won't actually begin until June, but she might as well build off the hype.
  • Black Sabbath's classic albums with Ozzy Osbourne now available on iTunes

Black Sabbath's been on a bit of a tear recently. The group is up for several Grammys when the ceremony takes place next weekend, it's announced a second leg of its tour in support of 2013's 13 album, and Converse is even releasing a sneaker that's Sabbath themed. What else could a fan ask for?
  • Nora Burkhartsmeier impresses with voice, piano, and songwriting on 'Remember'

It's easy to forget how young some of our favorite performers are when they enter the music world. From Michael Jackson's Jack 5 debut at the age of 11, to Lorde's chart-topping single "Royals" at the age of 16, it doesn't take much life experience to make a splash in the music industry. Tuesdays Under 21 is a Music Times feature dedicated to bringing attention to talented musicians and performers under the age of 21. Who knows? They just might be the next big thing.
  • Tim McGraw releases new single 'Lookin' For That Girl' and announces 2014 tour

Tim McGraw took home a score of country music awards for his 2013 album Two Lanes of Freedom, but that's not going to stop him from driving full throttle into 2014. The country star doubled up on his listeners' pleasures on Monday, both releasing a new single and announcing where he'd be touring during the upcoming year (a lengthy list, we might add).
  • Papoose releasing one mixtape a month during 2014

Papoose has announced that he'll be adding to his already prodigious mixtape career by releasing a free tape every month during 2014. The rapper said that the first forthcoming drop will be titled January, which would be followed by February.
  • Sony/ATV settles with Marvin Gaye's estate over 'Blurred Lines' lawsuit

Drama continues to surround last year's top-selling single "Blurred Lines," although the legal side of things might be cooling down after Sony/ATV settled with Marvin Gaye's estate regarding the latter's lawsuit alleging the company hadn't protected the R&B star's catalogue properly as on of its holdings.
  • 'Frozen' becoming Broadway musical according to Disney CEO Bob Iger

Few Disney movies (outside of the Pixar realm) have generated as much excitement in recent history as Frozen, and Disney is looking to cash in. The company confirmed on Monday that it will bring a version of the hit animated film to Broadway in musical form. You can tell that "cash in" is the right term because Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger made the confirmation during an interview with Fortune magazine.
  • Outkast will play 40 festival dates during 2014. Yeah. Forty.

It started innocently enough. Outkast was confirmed last week as the headliner for the Coachella Music Festival in Coachella. A few days later, member Big Boi dropped via Twitter that the duo would also be playing New York City's Governor's Ball music festival. Now, a few days after the Governor's Ball announcement, the group has declared that it will be performing at more than 40 festivals around the world during 2014.
  • Daft Punk, Mumford & Sons top year end vinyl sales charts

Every news service has been eager to tell you that vinyl sales continued to show huge gains, even as CD sales and digital music sales slumped in the United States. Sales of the 12" format increased by 32 percent, jumping from about 4.5 million in sales during 2012 to 6 million units moved during 2013. One piece of information not being shared as readily: What performers are dominating the vinyl resurgence? Nielsen Soundscan recently released its list of the Top 10 bestselling vinyl records of 2013.
  • Oasis catalogue available on Spotify, Deezer, other streaming services

Notice anything different when you turned on Spotify today? Of course you didn't. Nonetheless, a momentous breakthrough came for listeners, especially listeners of the British variety: Rockers Oasis finally made its catalogue available for the service. Fans can now check out classics such as Definitely Maybe and [What's The Story] Morning Glory.
  • Coachella 2014 sells out in record time, no doubt thanks to Outkast reunion

If you were hoping to go to Coachella 2014, we're sorry. Tickets for the annual music festival in Indio Valley have sold out. If you weren't one of the lucky few that jumped on it as soon as the tickets became available on Friday morning. Otherwise, you were pretty much hung out to dry. All tickets for the three-day event sold out in two hours and 37 minutes after ticket sales went live.
