This past Sunday, Tim McGraw was celebrating the upcoming release of Sundown Heaven Town at an intimate little club called Gray's on Main in Franklin, Tennessee. With his wife and kids in the audience, as well as friends from the country music industry, he was ready to present his latest project with the hope that they would all fall in love.
He kicked the show off with "Shotgun Rider" and the crowd loved it. Next up was "Keep on Truckin'" but there he ran into a snag -- he brain-farted on the lyrics! Tim must have seen it coming because before he started singing the tune, he said commented that he would sing it all, "if I can remember the words." Luckily, one of the folks in the audience was co-writer Brett Warren and when Tim got stuck, Warren was able to help him out.
He joked about it afterwards, saying, "When I get back on tour, I need to get one of those video screens with all the words on it. That's what happens after 20-something years!"
That's not a problem that most people outside of the public eye ever think about. When an artist is presenting new music, it's not a song they've sang thousands of times like their previous hits. It's still new in their minds even if they've been in the studio recording it. A year from now, chances are good that McGraw will remember every single word on Sundown Heaven Town without missing a beat. And in the meantime, if he flubs a line or two, it's OK since he is, after all, Tim McGraw!
