As with any other group conversation between the writers of Music Times, the debate between what albums to include on the site's Top 10 of the year was less than professional. There was crying (Ryan Book), yelling (Nicole Oran), and even threats of violence (Caitlin Carter). Ultimately, after countless votes and demands for recounts, ten finalists were chosen. Check out the albums that we kept in the stereo throughout 2013, along with defenses from the staff writers that loved the most. -
Carolyn Menyes' 2013 Playlist: Bear's Den, Lady Gaga, Janelle Monae and More
Music Times, like so many other music publications, was looking to publish a "Best of 2013" playlist. We met to discuss what such a playlist should include, and that's where we ran into trouble. We couldn't agree. Sometimes two of us just couldn't agree on whether the performer was amazing or terrible, and even when we agreed they were amazing, we couldn't agree on what track was most representative of their work. -
Nicole Oran's 2013 Playlist: Jay Z, Daft Punk and Savages
Music Times, like so many other music publications, was looking to publish a "Best of 2013" playlist. We met to discuss what such a playlist should include, and that's where we ran into trouble. We couldn't agree. Sometimes two of us just couldn't agree on whether the performer was amazing or terrible, and even when we agreed they were amazing, we couldn't agree on what track was most representative of their work. Hence it was decided that rather than try to agree (a seemingly impossible endeavor), everyone would get their own "favorites of 2013" playlist. We won't argue that these are necessarily the best tracks of the last year, but they're definitely songs that caught our respective attention and caused us to hit 'repeat" over and over and over again. -

SPIN Magazine, one of our most trusted sources for music across many genres, has released its annual list of the best 50 albums of the year. The top album is something you've definitely heard of, but may still come as a surprise. -

Vampire Weekend frontman Ezra Koenig defends the word of the year, "selfie"
As Oxford Dictionary recently announced, the word of the year is "selfie." It's clear that the extreme use of Facebook and Instagram have made the word what it is today. Some people use the social media platforms to declare that they hate it when people take selfies, but others are quite fond of the photo phenomenon, even if it's been going on for a while. -
