• Music Times 10 Best Albums of 2014; St. Vincent, The War on Drugs, Jack White & More...Who Takes No. 1?

    Glares were exchanged. Words were said that can't be taken back. Punches weren't quite thrown, although two Music Times editors (that won't be named) did engage in a karate chop battle reminiscent of the Clark Griswold vs. Plastic Lawn Reindeer battle of '91. When all was said and done however, the staff had managed to narrow a list of 943 albums down to a mere 10. Old standards like Jack White and Beck proved that their status within the music community was intact, and newer, much buzzed about acts including Sturgill Simpson proved themselves worthy of consideration during the previous 12 months.

    2014 was the year of a thousand controversies: Taylor Swift pulled all of her music from Spotify, Sun Kil Moon started a feud with The War On Drugs, Jack White accused The Black Keys of ripping him off (again), and almost nobody went platinum. When you put all of that aside, however, what you're left with is a bunch of incredible songs, which is really what it's all about. Here are the 25 best songs from 2014, as determined by Music Times writers Ryan Book, Caitlin Carter, Joey DeGroot, Kyle Dowling, and Carolyn Menyes.

  • Jack White Singles Discovered Inside Furniture After Being Hidden for 10 Years

    If you think Jack White's penchant for quirky, vinyl releases started with his solo career in the last few years, then you are way off. In the early 2000s, White and his friend Brian Muldoon played together in a duo known as The Upholsterers — named for their actual profession at the time — but instead of releasing their second single in a traditional manner, they decided to press just 100 copies and sew them into 100 pieces of furniture that Muldoon was reupholstering in 2004 without telling the owners of the furniture. Though it would be fair to assume that this story was just Jack White doing some self-mythologizing, Third Man Records claims that two of the 100 singles have recently been discovered.In celebration of the single's discovery, White has shared the cover artwork, which was created by Detroit artist Gordon Newton.     Stop us if you've heard this one before (actually, don't): Vinyl sales are hot. The trend continued in the United States during 2014 as The Wall Street Journal reports that sales for the format were up 49 percent from 2013-a huge, huge increase-translating to roughly 8 million vinyl records sold during 2014. No one with an ear to the music industry will be surprised to know that Jack White, one of the format's biggest promoters, is at the top of individual vinyl sellers as his Lazaretto sold nearly 76,000 copies.

    The biggest night in music is just around the corner, even if it's hard to believe that yet another year has passed. Today (Dec. 5), the nominations for the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards are being rolled out via Twitter and various television appearances. Early on, predicted favorites lead the nominations with Sam Smith, Iggy Azalea, Sia, Taylor Swift and Pharrell Williams all racking up multiple nods.

    The 2015 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is about five months away and the rumor mill on who will headline is already turning. AC/DC, Jack White and Drake are all current favorites to show up at the festival as long as they accept the invitations, Hits Daily Double notes. The website also claims that organizer Paul Tollett of Goldenvoice has standing offers of $8 million out to Led Zeppelin, The Talking Heads, The Smiths and the original Guns N' Roses to appear at the festival.

    The music industry has taken a few hits over the past few years with physical CD sales continually decreasing. Merchants were hoping for a successful Black Friday, but they were met with disappointment. Album sales were down 15 percent from last year, Neilsen Music reports.On the positive side, online CD sales were up 16 percent while vinyl nearly doubled its numbers from last year thanks to Record Store Day's "Back to Black" promotion.   • Jack White Discusses 'Rise and Fall of Paramount Records' Box Set on 'CBS This Morning' [WATCH]

    Last year, Jack White's label Third Man Records joined forces with guitarist John Fahey's Revant Records to release "The Rise and Fall of Paramount Records, Vol.1 (1917-1927)," a six-LP box set of remastered recordings from the legendary Wisconsin-based blues label. It also included several hundred pages of biographical material, a lengthy art book and an elegant case to carry the whole set.Now he is releasing the second volume with another 800 digitally remastered tracks, 6 LPs on vinyl and much more. The former White Stripes frontman went on "CBS This Morning" over the weekend to talk about the project that took many years to compile, what his inspiration was behind it and why it is such an important collection of music.In the four-minute interview, Jack White explains his reasoning behind the project, jokingly saying that it was to show "how ludicrous I can be with my free time." As the interview goes on, you see White's reverence for the artists in the box set and the artistry that went into Paramount Records.
