• Iggy Azalea, Lorde, Sam Smith Top Google's 'Year in Search' Musical Artists List for 2014

    As 2014 comes to a close, it's only proper that the good people at Google let us what's been popular in the world of online searches so that everyone can get on the same page. It turns out that Iggy Azalea was the most-searched musical artist of the year, followed by Lorde and Sam Smith. People also wanted to know about Taylor Swift, Daft Punk and "Weird Al" Yankovic.

    Idina Menzel put out a Christmas album titled "Holiday Wishes" in October. The singer takes on the usual standards like "White Christmas," "Silent Night" and "Baby It's Cold Outside," but her shining moment comes closer to the end of the album. Menzel decided to include a breathtaking version of Joni Mitchell's Christmas-themed classic "River." Her performance of the tune on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" blew viewers away.Yes, we know you can sing, Idina. We have all heard "Let It Go" a million times, but this performance is devastatingly beautiful. Menzel lends her Broadway pipes and pop sensibilities to Mitchell's tune and lets the songwriter's words do the rest."I wish I had a river so long / I would teach my feet to fly / Oh, I wish I had a river I could skate away on / I made my baby say goodbye," she sings in the video below. Check it out."River" is off Mitchell's 1971 release "Blue." It is regarded as one of the folk artist's best pieces.

    Some of the music industry's most powerful women gathered last week for "Billboard's" Women in Music Awards. Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Aretha Franklin attended the ceremony while some of 2014's standout ladies took home awards. Ariana Grande's speech for her Rising Star Award was a talking point from the night, but mostly due to her brother Frankie.The most confusing part of the speech was Frankie's involvement. Why wouldn't a female artist present the award to her? And if there is going to be a family member involved, why not ask two of the women Grande mentions in her speech: her mother and grandmother? It was nice that Frankie was excited about the win, but tone it down a bit. Your sister can handle this by herself.     Justin Timberlake took over Brooklyn last night, Dec. 14, for a huge concert at the Barclays Center. Collaborator and rap great Jay-Z joined the singer onstage to perform his 2013 hit "Holy Grail." Taylor Swift and Beyoncé were hanging out in the crowd and, during the performance, the two were spotted singing and dancing together, MTV News notes. The concert capped off a special weekend for Swift, who celebrated her 25th birthday with a slew of famous artists.Jay and Timberlake worked together on "Magna Carta Holy Grail" and The 20/20 Experience last year before taking their musical friendship on the road for all to see.   • 'Frozen's' 'Let It Go' Synced to Christmas Lights: Disney Hit Performance Would Make Clark Griswold Proud [WATCH]

    For years, Chevy Chase's Clark Griswold was the champion of holiday exterior illumination when he wrapped his home in thousands of Christmas lights for "Christmas Vacation." Since the 1980s, though, we have had a few technological advances in the area of Christmas lights. A few years ago, Miller Brewing Co. synced some lights to Trans-Siberian Orchestra's "Wizards of Winter" and people have been beefing up their displays ever since. The most recent home display features a marvelous performance of "Let It Go" from Disney's "Frozen."The video comes from listentoourlights.com, and it is one of the better light performances around. The centerpiece is the front yard that contains two large trees and some smaller decorations. Huge snowflakes on the house illustrate a "storm" backdrop as they "fall" to the ground. The cactus in the window kind of threw me off, though.Either way, it is a terrific display for fans of the movie or those fond of Christmas lights. Check it out below.Frozen's soundtrack was recently named the best-selling album on the "Billboard" 200 chart for 2014. It beat out releases by Sam Smith, Taylor Swift and Jason Aldean. The effort spent 13 weeks at the No. 1 spot, making it Disney's longest, best-selling soundtrack ahead of "The Lion King."This year has not been great for record sales, but Frozen was the first album to hit the platinum mark for 2014. Swift's "1989," Ariana Grande's "My Everything" and Aldean's "Old Boots, New Dirt" also surpassed 1 million sales. Smith's "In the Lonely Hour" is expected to join the club before year's end.

  • The Ebola Fighters Are 'Time' Magazine's 'Person of the Year'

    Just yesterday we were wondering if "Time" magazine would make sense out of its unusual short list of contenders for its 2014 Person of the Year, and thankfully its end game is rooted in logic. For a second there it looked like Vladimir Putin, with his ill-prepared Sochi Olympic Games and war with Ukraine actually had a chance at the title. Thankfully, "Time" announced this morning that the Ebola fighters have been named the 2014 Person of the Year.Since late August, the U.S. has panicked as some of our own stricken caregivers, such as Nancy Writebol and Dr. Kent Brantly in Liberia, have been transported back home to the States, where their hopes of survival are better. Nurses like Nina Pham and Amber Vinson were not properly trained to care for Ebola patients and ended up with the illness themselves. Adding insult to injury, the CDC went so far as to try to blame them for getting sick. The irony is that each caregiver has thought nothing of going back to work after their own recovery. When asked if they would care for another Ebola patient, the response has immediately been yes.

    Taylor Swift keeps on trucking following the Thanksgiving sales binge, keeping her no. 1 spot for 1989 for a fourth week with 244,000 equivalent sales. All told, Swift has been atop the Billboard 200 for 29 total weeks through her career. The only women ahead of her are Mariah Carey wit h30 weeks and Whitney Houston with 46, and it seems Swift could catch the former act next week if 1989 keeps its sales up.
